Spoilers Daredevil: Born Again discussion thread

That was a delight (The Defenders snub aside, I will always...er, defend...that series).

Which reminds me: As much as I've been wondering if Claire will return (I don't expect her to appear in the first season), I've completely forgotten about Hell's Kitchen's favorite cockroach, Turk Barrett! He needs to return more than anyone else!

Oh, I wonder...will we get reimagined version of the original opening theme...or something completely new? Considering how She-Hulk and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man paid homage to the theme (can't recall Hawkeye or Echo did the same), I want to believe we'll get some version of it incorporated in the new theme.

I guess we'll find out in a few hours... :D :D :D
The rumor going around is that the theme will be the same, but with new graphics. Guess we'll know for sure shortly.

I have no idea who that is.

Turk Barrett is a small time thug from the comics who appeared in at least one episode of every single Netflix show.

AKA Hell's Kitchen's favorite cockroach. :D

I don't remember him, but he is a nice connection between all the series. It's things like him popping up all over the place that make me love shared universes like the MCU so much.

I enjoyed the first episode. It reminded me I never completed the third season of the netflix run. Whoops.

Two episodes in and I am deeply unimpressed.

I haven't given up all hope. There was a lot of set up here and Cox and Donofrio are excellent as always.

But I was very nearly bored with the second episode.

You motherfucking bastards.

I began to worry as soon as the episode started because I suddenly realized we hadn't seen any footage of Karen and Foggy beyond the initial leaked imagery outside of their firm and at Josie's (aside from the one shot of Karen in a courtroom). So the moment Bullseye's shot hit Foggy, I knew how the rest would play out. Foggy is dead. Matt walks away from Daredevil. Karen leaves New York. Suddenly all of the pieces fit into place based on what was seen and not seen in the trailer and teasers.

And I hate it.

And yet I also get why they did it. But I still hate it.

They knew the fans wanted Karen and Foggy back, especially after the initial filming of the show before the restructuring. And still, Foggy and Karen are used only as a means to drive Matt's story towards a different position, in a different world, to deal with Mayor Fisk and other rising threats.

However, I think what annoys me the most is that Nikki James' Kirsten McDuffie and Clark Johnson's Cherry just step right into the same roles as Foggy and Karen, if not as intimately close (and yet Cherry already knows Matt's secret life and past, if less so). It's a frustrating situation since I've been a big fan of Johnson's for many years and James does well with her role, too, but it's hard not to see them as "the replacements." I'm going to do my best to try and look pass this whole set-up but it doesn't make it any less hard to accept.

As for the rest of the episodes and their plethora of stories, I'm loving Mayor Fisk and watching him navigate his newfound power and different role from Kingpin, while also dealing with his crumbling marriage with Vanessa. His relationship with her was always one of my favorite parts of the show, so I'm very curious to see how that aspect of the story plays out, especially since Matt's new girlfriend, Heather Glenn, just so happens to be their marriage counselor (that won't end well at all).

I don't know anything about White Tiger so I don't hold any preconceptions or loyalties to his portrayal, but I am curious to see his story play out, especially as someone who was trying to fill in the vacuum left behind by Daredevil (although he was already active prior to Foggy's assassination) and as part of Matt's newest street-level case that appears more sinister than from the onset (particularly with the Punisher skull tattoo...).

Lastly, I love how BB Urich is weaved into the two episodes, so far mostly focused on her street-level reporting about crime and Mayor Fisk's rise to power. I got goosebumps during her brief and rocky interview with him, especially with the knowledge that Fisk murdered her uncle. I wonder if that will ever resurface...

Overall, I'm enjoying what we're getting but I'm still smarting over the immediate dismissal of Karen and Foggy.

That was all right, but so far it doesn't feel to be anywhere near like on the level of the original Netflix series, which was absolutely addictive from the first scene. Eliminating the characters of Foggy and Karen from the scene is like making a deliberate decision to make a show that is not nearly as good as the original. I'm still going to watch it of course, but these first two episodes leave me seriously deflated. I'm not saying Eldon Henson should have turned down a paycheck, but I almost wish he had said "no" to coming back.

Huh. I really enjoyed the first two episodes. While I agree bringing back Foggy and Karen back just for an over glorified cameo irked, it did serve a purpose and changed Matt's trajectory. The diner scene was beautify acted and I found it riveting. Perhaps Karen and Foggy will pop back up in flashbacks? I'll be sticking around... Enjoying this...

This was friggin excellent. Feels so good to be back in business again with this character and series. To me it feels like Daredevil season 4. They absolutely nailed it. As for Karen and Foggy, I just wasn't as attached to them as others here are. The only pain is having to wait a week for the next episode.

Removing Karen and Foggy from Daredevil is like removing Spock and McCoy from Star Trek. It was the three of them that made up the heart and soul of the show. The two replacement characters, whose names I can't even remember, are bland and unengaging. I can't bring myself to care one way or the other about them.

FOGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGY! Damn that hurt.

D'Onofrio continues to be spellbinding as Fisk. I'd like to see more of what made him want to run for Mayor in the first place. Everything about his and Vanessa's problems were very relatable and realistic.

I loved McDuffie setting Matt up. He's so clueless sometimes.

It was a good start to the season, not quite to the level of the best of Netflix series.
I'd been afraid that they might kill off Foggy and/or Karen when they started talking about how there would be a "tragedy" that would drive Daredevil to cross a line, and one or both of them dying was the most obvious option. But I once I saw how much they were promoting the show, I assumed there was no way they would go through all of that if they were just going to get rid of them. I'm hoping that Karen might come back to NYC later in the season, because for me Matt's relationships with her and Foggy is a core part of the show, and losing them is really hurts it.
I do like the new characters, but it's not the same.
Of course the acting and action have been great, which is to be expected from Daredevil.
I do like Matt and Fisks storylines so far, they're both in interesting new positions, but we already know that they both find themselves falling back into old habits eventually.
I have to wonder if the White Tiger storyline is part of what was left over from the original version since it's very much focused on legal side of Matt's life and obviously Foggy & Karen aren't around.
The cop having the Punisher tattoo on his arm, makes me think they might be addressing the real-world issue of cops using his symbol. I know that and the fact that cops and other groups were taking on the symbol was the main reason why they changed it in the comics.
