Dangerous flood in our hometown

I'm glad you were able to save the cats. I hope there's no danger to your house.

There's no immediate danger to our house.

I don't know about our neighbors' cats, our neighbors seems careless to keep their cats away from their house. We haven't been able to see Rovin's father or other cats who is seeking the shelter, we would be more than happy to looking after them. I'm more worried about those cats now.

Now tell, was the dangerous flood dangerous? I'm afraid you weren't entirely clear on that.
Iguana, We live pretty much close to river. To add that rain, it goes up to your knees. Lots of objects were floated around there. It's too dangerous for us to drive that under the condition.
I think objects are not the only things that float over there. ;)

No. The ditches filled up and covered parts of the road and the water crept up the driveway, but stopped before getting too close to the house. There is a river nearby and this area is filled with swamps so there was a lot of water around to begin with.

Things have calmed down nicely here in SE Virginia. There were numerous low lying places experiencing tidal flooding Wednesday through Friday. Those unusually high tides were the consequence of winds produced by a high pressure system to the north (with clockwise air rotation) and the remnants of a tropical storm to the south (counterclockwise air rotation) pushing the Atlantic's water against the coast. There were brief respites from the flooding during the twice daily "low" tides. The low pressure remnants of the tropical storm have now moved out into the ocean and the high tides are now at a more manageable level.

My home fared well, as it is located on a relatively high plot of land (this corner of the state is pretty flat). People living on lower altitude lots had problems with water soaked carpets, furniture and walls. The local news reports showed numerous cars that had stalled in flood waters. There's a significant risk those cars will have ruined engines or permanent electrical problems.

A tunnel between Norfolk and Portsmouth had to be closed for a couple of days to prevent it from being flooded by the abnormally high tides. There were technical problems closing the gates on that tunnel a few years ago and the almost mile long tunnel was flooded to the ceiling for most of its length.

A large section of one of the local fishing piers collapsed in the high tide and violent surf. Another fishing pier was threatened by a barge that had broken its tow line.

A nice outdoor sculpture at Virginia Beach's central library was damaged by the high winds. It has several long gracefully curving metal parts that normally spin slowly in the breeze. Unfortunately the bottom pivot was bent nearly double and most of the sculpture is now hanging upside down.

That's good to hear. Has the flooding started to recede yet?

A lot of it has receded but there are still areas that are under water. Going downtown today we had to back track a couple of times to find a route that we could drive through. My husband ended up driving through water that I wouldn't have attempted, but my suv made it.
