Dandelion wine

Tonight 'hunter gatherer Man' bought home a bottle of 25 yr old homemade Dandelion wine. (I know not from where).
It looked like :ack:, smelt like :barf2: yet tasted like

So as I have dandelions on the grass outside I had a cunning plan...

Just looked up dandelion wine recipe ~ you need 4 pints of dandelions. How do you measure dandelions in volume? Do you compress them? I need more information; such as weight of dandelions, number of dandelions, amount of petals... This is just not specific enough!

And you have to let it settle for at least 6 months! ~ Sainsburys it is then!

Oh, by the way if this makes no sense it's because there is just an inch of Dandelion wine left. I didn't drink it all! I mean Man had some and the cat and I swear the horse got his nose it too.

So what's the weirdest homemade wine you've tasted?
And waht else could we use? :D

ps ~ I love the wrod dandelion ~ it brings to mind a very smartly dressed big cat :)

I had some kind of berry liqueur made by a friend of relatives... it was quite sweet and pleasant, but gave me terrible heartburn that night... in fact, most types of alcohol gave me heartburn, not to mention migraines. So glad I quit. The taste and sensation weren't worth the pain.

I wouldn't want to be your head tomorrow...

From what I read in one of my cookbooks, the dandelions have to be just the petals, no green, and they are supposed to be "reasonably packed", so I'm guessing more than loose, but less than crammed.

"I'm just a DANDY lion! A fate I don't desoive!"

:guffaw: An Officer ~ I think your prediction may come true!

I faintly recall making some homebrew involving a marrow and rum.

I say faintly because I think it worked. Oh my poor brain cells

Oh your berry thing could have been cherry vodka? Tins of cherries and Polish spirit (80% proof) but taste delicious :)

See me in my nightie running ahead of the lawnmowers going "No ~ my wine"

"I'd be brave as a blizzard" ;)

Yes, yes I could see this.

"I'd be brave as a blizzard" ;)
Tin Man: "I'd be gentle as a lizard...."
Scarecrow: "I'd be clever as a gizzard...."
Dorothy: "If the Wizard is a Wizard who will serve."
Scarecrow: "Then I'm sure to get a brain,"
Tin Man: "a heart,"
Dorothy: "a home,"
Lion: "the noive!"

:D

My grandparents-in-law make their own wine and it's usually something with berries and very strong. We usually have it at Thanksgiving which keeps things interesting.

My dad makes his own wine, but it's pretty standard stuff, in that he makes it out of grapes. He's damned good at it, though... I usually prefer his wines to what I can buy in a store.

If I remember right, it does refer to a big cat, particularly the pointy bits up front. The name derives from dent de lion, which describes the sort of toothy shape of the edge of the leaf.

Pass word along to ORSE, who was asking about the leaves: if picked early in the year, you get greens which aren't so bitter. From late spring through early autumn, you'll want to mix the greens with other leafy things or try cooking them.

Yes, yes I could see this.

So could I.

Husband tried to brew his own ale some years ago, but it didn't work out very well. It was cloudy and had way too much sludge at the bottom of the bottle. We're real ale drinkers so are used to a bit of sludge, but this stuff was practically undrinkable. :ack: There's a home brew shop a 5-minute walk from here so I think I know what Husband's Christmas present is going to be. Better luck next time and all that. ;)

I hope you were wearing your ruby slippers when you posted that :mallory:

It sounds like it should have been a cheese. :)

 It would have held it's own against the strongest cheese!

Family gatherings should always be accompanied by odd alcohol drinks ~ as you say, 'it keeps things interesting'

I would try, but have neither the space or the patience. I'd end up drinking it before it was finished to bad effects.

Cool!
Have realised I am too late for dandelions this year ~ sloe gin maybe :D

mac ~ I had a recipe for chocolate beer.
Never got round to making it ~ ate all the chocolate ;)
You can get some decent kits now thou can't you ~ it's just the waiting

Oh and An Officer ~ head is surprising ok! :techman:

I very much want to start brewing my own beer. I think I would have a lot of fun playing with flavors. Maybe I could make a dandelion lager!

You should talk to moocey. He might know where you could find a recipe for that.
