Dan Wheldon Tribute

I wouldn't watch NASCAR if you gave me 20 bucks and a hooker.

But damn, I read this Wheldon story earlier this morning, and it's heartbreaking. RIP dude.

Wheldon raced Indy Cars, so what's your price there? ;)

That was a horrible crash. The last time a driver was killed on the track in Indy Car was in 2006. Wheldon won that race.

RIP

Someone crashes at a car race, and the reaction is primarily sympathy, with some degree of concern that safety measures could be improved.

Someone crashes at an air show, and the reaction is primarily people wondering why air shows exist.

Personally I don't see the difference.

a crashing plane is much more likely to kill many spectators. that's why.

in racing the risk is pretty much limitied to the drivers (and marshals)

and Dan was one of my favourite drivers. so this sucks.

Because most people are stupid? Many people watch auto racing for the crashes? People don't go to an air show to see a crash so that when a plane goes down it's bigger news? Car crashes typically only kill the driver(s) while air show tragedies affect "innocent bystanders"? Because people are stupid?

Not really. Up until something goes wrong, pilots in air shows have precision control of their vehicles at high speeds, just like race car drivers. Even when they're doing a spin or other "uncontrolled" maneuver, the plane's behavior is still predictable and the pilot is very much in control. That isn't done over crowds in any case.

Even if something does happen, either the pilot will still be able to exert some degree of control (enough to steer away from bystanders), or else everything will be over too fast for the plane to travel far from its last safe position. It's not like they just go spiraling off randomly.

Injuries to bystanders in a air show crash are rare. The recent one has prompted a reevaluation of the route used in that race, which is the primary appropriate response. A secondary appropriate response would be to mandate better preflight inspections of the planes.

I'll leave the thread in peace. I still don't think there's a significant difference in the danger levels though.

WHAT an ugly day in racing. Fortunately, this doesn't happen very often any more. Still, in 30 years of watching all kinds of racing, that was one of the worst wrecks I've ever seen. The tribute laps were also among the saddest moments I've seen at a race track.
Darrell Waltrip wrote a magnificent column on speedtv.com today that explains "Why we race". If you don't get it, give that article a read.

Agreed DW can annoy you to no end at times, but this is a well written Article; Why We Race

and I now hear Fred Phelps and his mindless fools want to protest Dan's Funeral?

There is always room for safet improvements in Motor Sport, unfortunatly more often than not it takes a death for things to happen. As for claims people watch Motor Sports for the crashes, If that is so why is F1 with few crashes the most watched Motor Sport in the world?

Graham Rahal is a saint for the auction he's putting together. It's turning into one of the most diverse motorsports memorabilia auctions in recent memory. It's really impressive how many racing personalities from all over the world have been throwing items in, too. Graham's dad ought to be real proud of him.
I'm going to have to go softie on a few things after all this. I've always ripped Dallara's cars for being ugly and haven't exactly been excited about the new car's looks. But, now that they're going to name it after Wheldon, I'll shut up. I've also been very critical of Versus' coverage and the fact that they're a nothing network. But, they're actually going to carry the memorial service live on Sunday, which they didn't have to do. I'll shut up about them, too.
