Damn you, RROD!

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-120G..._4?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1272503284&sr=1-4 Hey, I could get a brand new 360 Elite for $300 and it comes with Halo ODST which I haven't played yet and Forza 3 (don't care about that one)! So are the newer consoles quieter? Mine has a really noisy fan. And less prone to RROD of course.
FWIW, my Elite is much quieter that my other 360 and it's an older Elite.

From my understanding each generation has been getting quieter and more reliable.

I had my eye on the MW2 360 but I have a feeling they may make a Halo one soon.
I really want a 250 gig-er

So if I don't play on XBox Live or download anything should I just get the Arcade version for $200 then? I thought they didn't have a hard drive to save games on or something, did that change with the new iterations?

That should be sufficient.

The Arcade model has been discontinued, so any that are left are old stock that hasn't sold through. You'd be best getting a 360 with a small HD really, it would give you the option to install a game or two (vastly cuts down on the noise and heat from the console) and you won't have to worry about running out of memory for saves. I've managed for well over two years with the bog standard 20gig model, using it for DLC as well as saves. It's only recently i've had to upgrade to a bigger HD.

So my second one has RROD'd - and still has a disc in which I now can't take out...
Ouch. Have you visited this website? That has a few solutions for a stuck disc tray.

Butter knife. Let no disc remain stuck!

See below comment for interesting info.

Xbox 360 now takes flash drives. Download the software and plug an 8 gb in. Instant memory. No overpriced MS hard drives...

I wouldn't rely on that long term. It's only a matter of time until Microsoft decide to alter it so that only Official Microsoft Brand Flash Drives work with the console.

OK so now my 360 freezes every 5 minutes of gameplay (screen becomes frozen with artifacts all over it), but I'm not getting any red rings. Is there anything to do about this, or is it time to buy a new one?

OK, turned it back on today to attempt that stuff. Now it's the three red rings. I opened up my warranty and it says it's only for a year, I've had it two years now. Guess it's time to buy a new one! It's not that bad, I think I got the old one for $250-300 on a rebate and it gave me two full years of faithful service. ... Now I've read online they extended the warranty to three years, but is it three years from the time I bought it? Because I bought one of the older models on clearance two years ago before the new ones came out. And if I mail this to them for repair/replacement, do I pay for the shipping, and how long will it take to get it back to me?

Yes, from the time of purchase. You should be good for a free replacement.

You don't have to pay for anything. You can print a shipping label, or have them send you one. They sent me a box in addition to a label when it happened to me, but Mistral is saying they don't do that anymore due to costs so you might have to get your own box.

As for time, for me it was about a week, I think. It was quite a while ago, so I can't remember exactly.

Xbox Repair FAQ

Well it was probably stupid of us but we bought a new 360 today so we wouldn't have to wait. Maybe I'll send the old one away to be repaired then trade it into Gamestop or something. On the plus side, the new one is black, much quieter, has 120 GB, and Halo ODST and Forza 3, both of which I can sell off to make about $55 back!

Cool BTW the Halo Reach Beta starts today so you got Halo:ODST just in time!!

I'm on dial-up ;) I don't do the multiplayer death stuff anyway.

I feel your pain, I was too up until October last year.
Man I don't know what I would do if I had to go back, I'm totally diggin' being on XBL.

BTW you can get on XBL if you have a computer or laptop close to your 360.

Yay, got my Xbox back today!

Man, my old console must have been completely toast, because they just sent me a brand spanking new one instead.

Not quite. I shipped it out on April 27, and it just got back today, so the whole thing took 15 days. Still, not too horrible.
