I always wondered how people eat a cake like that.

Depending on what kind of fondant was used, more often than not one would cut the cake then individuals would either peel off or eat around the fondant.

If it's Choco-pan, though... from what I've heard, it's quite edible.

Well, fondant is edible, too, but one really wouldn't want to eat it... at least not Wilton fondant. Oh god, it's gross.
