Dagger of the Mind

^^^Chances are they shot it, but it appears Lincoln Enterprises sliced up every available trim from the show to sell in their catalog, which is why I suspect we'll almost never see a deleted scene show up for Star Trek.

If Kirk wasn't so in love with himself, who knows... he might've had Noel stay on.
;)

Wingsley, I think you are mishearing the dialogue.

VAN GELDER
Warn your Captain! Doctor Adam...Doc...Doctor Adams will destroy....

SPOCK
Destroy *how*?...*what*?

VAN GELDER
Like...death.

I must be hard of hearing, too. I thought Van Gelder said:

"Light...death."

As in the "light" of the neural neutralizer.

People hear "light death," "right death," "white death," "blank death," and "like death." Even the closed captioning--put together by people who evidently never thought to look at the script--has the nonsensical "right death."

The scripted line from the Final Revised Draft dated August 5, 1966 in Scene 89C says that Van Gelder's line is "Like death!" That is to say, the machine can drain you so completely and utterly that you are left in a state that's *just like death*

No it's spoke "write death" - Within the show it's stated that Adams was using the machine to put his own thought there, within the minds of others. The closed cap people were close to it but wrote "right" instead of "write"

"Listen to ME! This case is closed! Now leave MY courtroom and never come back or you'll be in big trouble. Do you hear me?"

It sounds like the real spoken line by Van Gelder is "Like death"

Case reopened:
The line is "write death" - the closed cap people were close here but wrote - right death instead of write death ! And now the case is closed !

"Write death!" makes pretty much no sense whatsoever.

Here's a shot of the script showing what the writer's intended line was:

It appears "Like death!" is indeed what Dr. Simon van Gelder is saying.

And the most memorable lines in "Dagger of the Mind"? Let's hear your choice!

Here's mine:

KIRK
I have no desire to damage my brain. Can this be handled with reasonable safety, yes or no?

Now, that line is pure, unadulterated, 100% Grade-A Roddenberyan STAR TREK!!!

Outstanding! One of the better episodes.

Morgan Woodward is incredible. One can feel his pain. Shatner's crazed laughter is memorable too, IMO.

I just have one other word to say about this episode.

Marianna Hill.

Make that two words. She is in a class by herself.

I would note that "Dagger of the Mind" & "The Apple" are two of the only times IIRC that ST:OS showed female Enterprise crew members defeating men in unarmed combat.
