D MINUS for TMP

Slightly off-topic, but I'd just like to say I thought "The Black Hole" was pretty damn good. Not brilliant or anything, but very enjoyable and visually wonderful. I especially liked the big reveals towards the end. I borrowed it from a friend not knowing anything about it and was throughly entertained, much more than I was when watching "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".

Same here. No masterpiece and BH actually has some pretty major problems, but just a lot of fun with some nice effects.

I think TMP is a much better movie though. But BH is more fun.

With a possible 150 pts available, TMP only scored 84 points, which is only 56%...landing a D- as its overall score...His over all score, on a 1-10 scale, was a 3...gave it an overall score of 6.2. ...giving TMP an overall score of 7...

Maybe I'm borderline autistic (my wife thinks I am because I ignore her), but the only thing I got out of your whole review was the weird rating system. If each of you was rating on a 1-10 score, then why did you convert it to a total of 150 points? 150 points isn't a very common scale to use, either. Why not just divide your total score (16.2) by 30 (total possible score; 3 x 10)? You would then come up with your actual rating = 54%, instead of 56%, which is incorrect.

Except for two fx shots, TMP SLV is probably my top favorite movie of all time. It was one of the first films I ever saw in the theater (Star Wars being the actual first.) It was also one of the first real introduction to Star Trek. There is just something about that movie that keeps drawing me in. The DE is a horrible version. It's sound mix destroys part of what I loved about the movie and it cut some very important lines.

That 'SLV' is a TV-edit.
I assume you talk about the actual theatrical version that you have seen in the cinema?

Ah, you, of course, talk about the confirmation of the atheistic world view 'We all create god in our own image.'

I did see the Theatrical version in the theaters but I was always allowed to stay up when TMP was on TV so that is the version I know and remember. The first VHS copy of it I got was the SLV and it is my favorite.

Creating God in our own image is not necessarly an atheistic view. There is a pharse a lot of Christisns use: "Putting God in a box." It is essentially the same thing. But that is not the only line that I miss.

Well I'm in my 20s and after just watching the new movie for only the second time (first time since it came out), the space battles are definitely one of my least favourite parts. They drove me nuts with how crowded and flashy they were.

I couldn't tell where the hell anyone involved was, who was shooting at who, etc. And for me the most thrilling moments in all Star Trek movies and shows have been interactions between characters that involve at least some dialogue instead of just fighting.

I'm also in my early 20s. My complaints about The Motion Picture stem from problems with the acting, pacing, and writing of the film, not from a lack of explosions. (In general, I prefer 1930s and 40s romantic comedies, melodramas, and detective films, none of which are rife with paroxysms of fire.)

When I saw it recently, I was stunned by the poor quality of the acting; only William Shatner's was somewhat believable (I didn't see McCoy's scenes). None of the actors were helped by the dismal dialogue and shockly misguided direction, but I'm amazed that the performances of even the bit players were considered acceptable. It's a terrible movie, held up only slightly by its music and beautiful model effects.

In the interests of disclosure, my favorite Star Trek movies are, in order:

1. The Wrath of Khan
2. Star Trek
3. Generations (TV edit)
4. The Undiscovered Country
5. The Voyage Home

My only gripe with the DE was that they used a different bit of McCoy talking to Kirk in his quarters, the original one was made with a better version. The DE one was dry.

I have to say that on my friends TV, it was a great print. The starfields were incredible and the entire 'kirk/enterprise' love scene was very majestic and crisp.

But there is definately a 'sanitized' feel to this movie that may have been intended, but NOT a good way to get a movie series off and running. Bloated was what Jed came away with, and in hindsight, he may have a point (and a complaint reviewers of the time made as well)
