Cyfa's art challenges and other bits & bobs

Inspiration struck after spending the evening ga(y)zing at Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike in "The Cage" (he's so dreamy) - specifically, his excursion jacket. The jacket has a wide panel running down its centre which matches the grey panel of the Voyager flight suits, plus it has pockets (a rarity in Starfleet uniforms) which seem eminently practical in such a garment. The colours will be based on those of TOS - a gold centre panel with darker edging (and, possibly, silver-white piping as a nod to the bands around the sleeves of the TOS excursion jacket and the white shoulder yoke of the Voyager flight suits), with a navy blue/grey or dark grey/black main body (Memory Alpha states the jacket to be grey, but my colourblind eyes see blue).

So, my TOS flight suit will look something like this, I hope (please ignore the toast crumbs - I was eating breakfast when I took the photo. Oh, and ignore the waste extraction bit - that was my justification for having primary coloured tubes running over it a la TOS environmental suit, but I've given them the heave-ho now.):

Cannot wait to see the final result.

- I'm a terror for leaving things until the last possible moment, so here's a quick work-in-progress/update until I (hopefully) finish it at the end of May

I saw the Discovery trailer this morning, and don't know whether to be concerned or not that my intended design seems similar to the new 2250s uniforms...?

After a great deal of dithering over whether to have a rethink due to the similarities to the Discovery uniforms, laziness kicked in and I decided to keep to my original design - Discovery comparisons be damned!
After some experimentation, I eventually lost the copper collar, belt & piping (doesn't it look like a crutch when not in position?) and settled on the basic look - middle left and bottom right.

Now I need to work on the detail...

Ooooh yeah, I'm definitely digging that! Losing the collar and belt was a good call, but you might want to experiment with a belt running around the entire jumpsuit instead of only the middle section. Perhaps that looks better, but I think I like it the way it is now. It really conveys the feeling of a jumpsuit :-)

- Thanks, BorgMan!
I've been tinkering with this TOSified flight suit on and off for the last few days, but everything I do seems to take it further away from what little TOS style there already is. So, I've decided to stop, and stick with what I've got so far:

FF4D-ZHowLMrlDLEPwfDn5a1roHhZ3ImsM-hH9zDkiedal3MU6aG0hRdy2HFOeB2HZDw7ye3L6CWu4cyjjB5VY4kVuWaNmlVRYZeyw=w1440-h900-no

On the left: As per the previous post, but with seams denoted in black, and silver officer braids around the cuffs.
Middle: Added gold stitching/piping along the edge of the central panel, and widened the cuff braids to be more like those on the excursion jacket from "The Cage". I don't know if I like this or not. I think I might...
Right: Ruined it by marking out the shoulder and chest seams as a nod to the "Drive" flight suits bright white shoulder yokes. Now it looks more like the dress uniforms from Enterprise. Bah!

Before I forget, the following images (all screen shots from TrekCore) were my inspiration:

Voyager's flight suits from "Drive". I really like the distinctive central panel and those white shoulders!

The excursion jacket from "The Cage" which has a similar central panel, plus I like the colours and the excuse to stare at Captain Pike (and, to a lesser extent, Jose Tyler).

The classic TOS uniform top dictated the shoulder seams, and the sparkly environmental suit shows that my flight suit's disco-themed central panel is grounded in TOS reality (or some such waffle ;) ).

You have the most unique and old fashioned way of going about things, and that is not a criticism.
More a case of unusual and cool with so much stuff today done on 3d printer, photoshop etc, and non conventional programs.

Yup, I'd go with the middle!
- The middle it is! (It is the least objectionable of the three, I think)

- Thank you. It's a mixture of laziness (I can't face having to learn all that technical jiggery-pokery, despite almost assuring BorgMan earlier in this thread that I would - I still haven't got around to downloading Photoshop CS2 or whatever it is!), stubborness (at having to learn all that technical jiggery-pokery... ), fear (of all that technical jiggery-pokery... ), and I do like being different and/or contrary!

I like seeing the mix of influences. Also, based upon the colors, it might fit in with DSC quite well :)
- Ha! If only I'd thought of this sooner I could have been assistant costume designer!

I dunno, my shiny golden penis isn't quite sure what to make of it. Maybe if the gold tapered to a point (almost like a police badge) down to the base of the peen, lol?

cyfa, I was almost 35 before I got my first computer, was almost 40 before I tried photoshop, believe me never too old to learn, but if your original way and unique style which i like suits you, why change it.
If it aint broken dont fix it.
- If- sorry, when, I get photoshop, I can't imagine giving up the physical art, but it'll be nice to have the choice. I'm curious: Did you teach yourself, or get help from a friend/s, or take classes?

- Yours is golden?!? I thought they only came in silver or copper...?
Wouldn't you be a bit perturbed that the point might poke your peen when you perch*?

* Perch is as close as I could get to sit and still begin with a P ;)

I started off doing nude celebrity fakes, mainly cos those forums had guys that gave advice , which annoyed a lot of trek people, before moving on to making posters and flyers for people before returning to trek fakes but this time non adult themed, plus logos, wallpapers etc.
Yes I am self taught with the exception of picking up hints and tips of people, mostly through trial and error.
In the end you know what you want, so just a case of getting the blasted computer to do it for you...lol

Hey, look, I don't judge what you like, and I expect you to do the same.

But seriously though. Something as formfitting as what it looks like you're going for needs to consider various bulges in the area. When it's black, you can get away with more, but various mounds of copper/silver genitals and inner thighs I don't think translate as well from page to body. What do Tom and B'elanna look like underneath the table?

Funnily enough, Arpy, when I posted these pictures on my blog, someone made a comment about the likelyhood of golden "camel-toe". Seems like it's a good job this never actually was a real TOS flight suit

There are special holographic generators that smooth the lines ;)

I've finally got around to starting work on the June Art Challenge, having decided to go with a beach party theme. Here's what I've come up with so far:

The Cardassian's gold short-shorts were inspired by Kylie's gold hotpants in her "Spinning Around" video!

I vote ‘genius’. I really like the style of your artwork, @Cyfa. Do you have a background in fashion design or something similar?

Wow, thanks, M! No. No, fashion design background, although I've always enjoyed designing and drawing out-of-the-ordinary clothes - I'd hesitate to call my creations "fashion", though
I loved art at school (it was my favourite subject), then I continued with it at college and dabbled with textiles, too. After college I went to art school and studied graphic design which put me right off! I didn't do anything remotely arty for years afterwards except (make and) decorate cakes for friends now and again. Then I got really into Star Trek and my creative side emerged once more - mainly by doodling & sketching starships (like many of us on the board), coming up with new or reimagined aliens, and designing the uniforms and clothes that they'd wear.

Anyway, enough about me - Here's today's effort towards this month's Art Challenge: Beach Bolians (co-husbands and wife)
