Cyfa's art challenges and other bits & bobs

Seriously, I'd download CS2 right now and play around with it. That CPU is a bit dated but it's a good one. You can't lose anything with it eh?
- Thanks! I'll have a look into it.

That wouldn't make a bad TOS starship insignia either. :bolian:
On the design, it's great! And yes, it would look good as a TOS insignia.
- You mean, something like this:

I'd move the department symbol to the middle and make the black a little more jagged, but yeah, I think that could work. USS Quasar or USS Pulsar coming in hot!

It does look better with a jagged background - Thanks, Arpy! USS Pulsar insignia it is, then (I'd called the original the USS Nostradamus - prophet/Prophets ;) )

I prefer the symbol at the top, though. I think...

:techman:

It works!

I didn't even realize until years later that different ships had different insignia. It's almost too bad that they adopted the Enterprise insignia for all Starfleet personnel in the movies.

Rearing Redshirts is a time consuming endeavour. And despite all the care and attention one might lavish upon them, only one out of a dozen survive to maturity. But one musn't blame oneself. If only they weren't so stupid. And pretty.

I've given up with this one and I'm letting him be raised by birds - it's much simpler and cost effective.
(please excuse the uniform - it's made of old curtains and magazines as I didn't want to fork out on good quality fabric that was just going to get burnt/ripped/stab holed/covered in blood...)

Hey, now. Some of us are proud redshirt engineers, not those silly, accident-prone security officers. :P

Interesting concept!

Exciting news! Some of my hand (and bird) reared Redshirts are appearing in a new film:

[Full disclosure: They're only appearing because I'm financing some of the bloody thing. Oh, and a previous version of me came up with the story and is directing it.]

Like the placement of the Starfleet delta! Also, Corgis? Too bad about the music only being on Sundays though. ;)

looks good.
Used that same poster myself in other non trek photoshop stuff.
Like the delta placement as well

- Thanks, B.J. Heh, yes, the corgis and the Sunday music are little in-jokes for a couple of friends for when I put this up on my blog. In fact, except for the Redshirt names, all the credits refer to friends of mine.
As for the Starfleet delta placement, both it and the skull came from a t-shirt I saw somewhere. I just copied it as best I could remember.

- Thank you, too, gazomg. It's such an iconic poster - I couldn't resist. I've got a list of a few others that I may try my hand at.

I was perusing some old files searching for inspiration when I found these:

I can't remember when I painted them? I know it was years ago, though (early 2000s). The image on the left was my interpretation of a post-TNG Starfleet environmental suit, and the one on the right is of a utility suit (similar to those white engineering uniforms from TWOK et al). If memory serves, I'd traced a couple of models from aftershave/eau de toilette ads in a magazine, then drawn on the suits, transferred them onto (cheap) black paper and painted them with gouache. Then I used a very fine permanent marker for the detail.

Here are the original sketches & notes, including a standard duty uniform, which really looks like a pair of pyjamas. Perhaps that's why I never painted it?

These are concept sketches of future versions of the rank insignia from TOS movie era. Either that or alternate universe variants? My avatar is a more refined, but still unfinished, version.

I'm going back in for another look as I'm still not feeling particularly inspired...

Thanks, gazomg. I recall trying to give it a somewhat colourless appearance - perhaps a milky grey-blue? - that would take on the colours of its surroundings. Although, now, I can't think of a good reason why that would be a desirable feature?

For the May Art Challenge of retro-ising (there's probably a better word than this to describe the gist of @aridas sofia 's challenge, but I can't think of it right now) a later Trek design to a TOS style, I've decided to take on the flight suits as worn by Tom, B'Elanna, and Harry in the Voyager episode "Drive". I originally mentioned doing the flight suits as a joke, but the month is nearly half gone, and if I don't commit to something, I'll just let it go until next month (when I'll probably not do anything either).
So, here are some very hasty preliminary sketches and a prospective colour palette:

Inspiration struck after spending the evening ga(y)zing at Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike in "The Cage" (he's so dreamy) - specifically, his excursion jacket. The jacket has a wide panel running down its centre which matches the grey panel of the Voyager flight suits, plus it has pockets (a rarity in Starfleet uniforms) which seem eminently practical in such a garment. The colours will be based on those of TOS - a gold centre panel with darker edging (and, possibly, silver-white piping as a nod to the bands around the sleeves of the TOS excursion jacket and the white shoulder yoke of the Voyager flight suits), with a navy blue/grey or dark grey/black main body (Memory Alpha states the jacket to be grey, but my colourblind eyes see blue).

So, my TOS flight suit will look something like this, I hope (please ignore the toast crumbs - I was eating breakfast when I took the photo. Oh, and ignore the waste extraction bit - that was my justification for having primary coloured tubes running over it a la TOS environmental suit, but I've given them the heave-ho now.):

I'd go with TOSifying ;-) I always liked the pilot jump suits, this will prove interesting :-)
