On Saturday, while on Twitter, I came across a right-winger stating how Star Trek was not liberal (link edited)

I pointed out how inaccurate that is (link edited) and the person and like minded people didn't like me saying that.

In fact, this morning, the person that started the thread (who has a pretty respectable following, apparently) was complaining about an accurate depiction of Emmitt Till's lynching (link edited)

Also, it eventually ended with someone whining about Zendaya being in Dune (Link edited)

Nothing new, unfortunately. While bigots have been particularly obvious since Disco began, they've always been part of the fanbase. They're the ones who complained about Rejoined and sent death threats to the Voyager writers over the mere rumour of a gay character.

Best to not engage; there's no reasoning with them.
 
There's this idea that because Star Trek tends to promote diversity and inclusiveness that all Star Trek fans believe in that. Some take only the aspects of Trek they like and either ignore or trash the aspects they don't like. Trek attracts people from all walks of life, including some paths we may disagree with or find downright repugnant.

But yeah, Twittter isn't the most enlightened platform to hang around...
 
When the Republican party went all ultra conservative on us, worthless idiots like that decided they could come out of the shadows.
 
TNG was huge and got lots and lots of fans, and was probably the most Conservative Trek of them all. Everything was an allegory (gays, trans etc) so they can brush it away saying it doesn't apply to humans. It's wrong and they missed the point, but it's there.

I once read something where someone called TNG a gated community where the (white), affluent people lived in the Federation and had the "bad neighbours" the Klingons next door and a bunch of others they kept away from. That's probably what appeals to them.
 
There are a lot of things that less extreme conservatives could find valuable in Trek.
* The similar nature of the Federation constitution to the American one.
* The similarities the Federation's enemies (Romulans, Cardassians, Borg) have with totalitarian governments.
* The fact that marriage and family are valued.
* The apparently unrestricted access to personal weapons.
* And the powers that be did keep an eye on the sensibilities of the conservative types... individual religious beliefs were usually respected (Worf and Kira both had strong beliefs), and they made the active decision not to feature gay characters. Even "The Outcast" was carefully allegorical.
 
For TNG, it was progressive for the audience of the time, the writers even wanted to be more, but didn't think they could get away with it, but as said, people will take what they want and eschew what isnt in there wheel house.

As for allegory, its always been that way, give aliens whatever topic and have a discusion about it. Give pros and cons, etc.

I don't think it's a good idea to give these people any attention or promotion.

I'm not even sure this should be here at all.

I'm going to temporarily close this while I consult with the other staff.
