CW 2009-2010 schedule announced

There's a clear rationale for moving Fringe. The powerful lead-in shows are used to introduce new shows and then those shows are moved to other nights to test whether they can become durable hits in their own right. That's a forward-leaning programming posture aimed at trying to strengthen ratings across the board. It puts sophomore shows at greater risk than a defensive stay-put posture, and fans of course would rather see their favorite shows stay in safer timeslots, but the move makes sense, especially since CSI has been weakening significantly in the 18-49 demo. The move may not work - there are no guarantees after all - but it's by no means a dumb one.

Oh and jsut so people stop bitching about Reaper.

Since the season is now official over.

Season Average (for hour longs)

Top Model Fall Cycle 3.970 million
Smallville 3.880 million
Top Model Spring Cycle 3.582 million
Supernatural 3.186 million
One Tree Hill 2.826 million
Gossip Girl 2.800 million
90210 2.548 million (everything lower was cancelled)
Reaper 2.096 million
Privileged 1.773 million
Stylista 1.618 million
13: Fear is Real 1.138 million

By adults 18-49 (Industry standard for setting the majority of ad rates)
Top Model (Fall Cycle) 1.892
Top Model (Spring Cycle) 1.644
Smallville 1.614
One Tree Hill 1.425
Gossip Girls 1.396
Supernatural 1.322
90210 1.300 (all shows lower cancelled)
Reaper .883
Privileged .833
Stylista .744
13: Fear is Real .5

By adults 18-34 (CW key demo group and what sets most of its ad dollars and about the only demo where they beat some other networks)
Top Model Fall Cycle 2.075
One Tree Hill 2.030
Gossip Girls 1.926
Top Model Spring Cycle 1.90
90210 1.670 (and those results are why they program the way they do)

Smallville 1.580
Supernatural 1.282 (all lower shows were cancelled)
Privileged 1.069 (and why it had a better chance then Reaper)
Reaper .875
Stylista .813
13: Fear is Real .775

For fans of Reaper. Sorry but by all possible measures (hell even by the adults 25-54: .85) was a very poor performer. Barely beating Privileged in the 18-49 demo and losing badly to it in the more important to the CW 18-34 demo.

As to why the CW goes for the 18-34 demo (and even more specifically the 18-34 female demo), because its the only success the network has had. And yes when they started they went after any demo they could get, its the only one that has given them any success. In the short term it makes sense, in the long term its not sound business.

Oh and to compare to previous year of the shows that were renewed.

Gossip Girl
LY 2.580 million viewers
1.25 18-49
TY 2.800 million viewers up 8.5%
1.396 18-49 up 11.7%

One Tree Hill
LY 2.916 million viewers
1.34 18-49
TY 2.826 million viewers down 3.1%
1.425 18-49 up 6.3 %

Supernatural
LY 2.918 million viewers
1.189 18-49
TY 3.186 million viewers up 9.2% (largest increase both in total number and percent for the CW)
1.332 18-49 up 12.% (largest increase in total number and percent for the CW)

Those that declined.

Smallville
LY 4.158 million viewers
1.69 18-49
TY 3.880 million viewers down 6.7%
1.614 18-49 down 4.5 %

Reaper
LY 2.623 million viewers
1.189 18-49
TY 2.096 million viewers down 20%
.0883 18-49 down 25.4%

Top Model is also down in both viewers and demo double digits.

Reaper had steady ratings that actually went up a little from the first weeks, it was also against AI.

90210 had worst ratings than Reaper the last 2 months, it's ratings are falling.

Yes and more importantly no.

Yes it the last two months (the last 8 episodes) Reaper averaged 2.003 million viewers versus 1.965 million for 90210.

But total viewers are not the primary data source that networks use.

The focus for all networks is how a shows performs in various Demo groups. That is what is the primary factor in setting ad rates (followed by income level of audience, then total viewers),

Now each network can market to different demos. For example CBS focuses more heavily on the 25-54 age group (and why it needs more viewers), while others seek out the 18-49. And the netlets have focused on the 18-34.

Now compare those two shows in those Demo groups. Starting with what is most important with the CW.

18-34
Reaper .85
90210 1.31

90210 is going to generate a ton more income off of ad rates.

Then the standard 18-49
Reaper .85
90210 1.07

So even with most networks 90210 would generate more revenue.

Then how about the anti CW demo the 25-54

Reaper .8
90210 .89

So in even that demo, 90210 is going to generate more revenue for the CW.

And thats just this year, even last year with Smallville has a lead in it didn't do well in the demos. With a below 1.0 average in the adult 18-34.

We have to understand that if you are under the age of 13 you really don't count much in primetime, and if you are over 55 you really don't count much in primetime.

I am not saying any of these things because I like 90210 (or One Tree Hill, Gossip Girls, ect) or that I hate Reaper. Because I hate the teen soaps and I have enjoyed at least some of Reaper.

But it is a business, and Reaper has shown in two years and 3 different time slots that it doesn't fit with the CW and doesn't generate enough revenue to continue. Hell it might do far, far better in syndication (where it will get more coverage and often better time slots). And yeah against Idol is tough but many shows have tough time slots. Hell I hate that most of Supernaturals life has been in historically the toughest time slot all year round.

And unlike all the shows that did get renewed, Reaper has no outside revenue that goes to the CW. If it was broadcast overseas that doesn't go to the Warners or Viacom. DVD sales don't go to either parent company, internet sales don't go to either parent company.

Thats why Privilege a show with significantly fewer viewers and a slightly worse adult demo (though a significantly higher 18-34 demo) would have been saved over Reaper, because the CW's parent companies to get outside revenue from a show like Privileged.

And yes 90210 ratings are falling (even more then what most shows do during the spring). But I think the CW is thinking (not only are the demos still so much stronger) but its a much better program to cross promote then Reaper, it also possible that it has suffered significant drops to over saturation by running in most cases at least twice a week.

Really the only thing I am upset by with Reaper is that the CW didn't try (say for a month) to air it out of Top Model. Why waste a good lead in on a rerun. I mean seriously. I understand that on paper there is not much audience crossover, but you never know it might have gained a bit.

Tell me why are they bringing the another classic back on tv, Melrose Place? :wtf: It upsets me even more why the cw network are cancelling Reaper? It's my favorite show of all.

Yeah, I'm gonna miss Reaper. One of my favorites, too. Looks like my only new favorite NOT to get the axe is Fringe. My record's worse than ever this year.

I guess this year wasn't too bad for me. Of my shows, Reaper and Pushing Daisies got the axe, but Heroes, Lost and Chuck survived. Plus Mad Men and Breaking Bad, but they were never in danger. Ditto for The Tudors, Big Love, Entourage (which really needs to end pretty soon) and Dexter (thankfully bulletproof for now). :bolian: And 24. Given the way this season ended, they get another season to wrap things up for good & all.

LOST was never in danger either.

Plus The Tutors was kind of canceled, it was meant to have 5 seasons, but will end next year after only 4 seasons.

I'll be watching Gossip Girl. It's entertaining.

I think I might give Melrose Place 2.0 a shot. I have this feeling though that I'm going to be disappointed. Rarely does a remake work as well as what made the original so enjoyable. So I don't really expect it to be as much fun. These characters don't look to be as interesting as Kimberly, Michael, Sydney, Amanda. And much like 90210 2.0 I suspect I'll be bemoaning the fact that I wished the show would focus more attention on the old guard that are returning--Michael and Sydney--than on the new cast. Then throw in the fact that the showrunners worked on Smallville and I'm concerned but hey I'll give it a shot.

Vampire Diaries looks like it could be potentially interesting so I'll give it a shot. I'll be tuned into Supernatural. Other than that meh.

Is Gossip Girl any good? A couple of guys have recommended it to me, but I don't want to waste my time if its trash.

Oh golly. More Smallville. More shirtless males being tied up by woman. More kryptonite. More disappointing season finales.
