Current shows to influence a new Trek TV Series?

I've long said that Trek should take a big leaf out of the Joss Whedon storybook. People here have mentioned Buffy and Firefly. In fact, just give Whedon control of the next Trek TV series. The new Trek series needs more humour, and to lighten up a little. The original Star Trek had fun with itself from time to time.

I don't want to see adult Game of Thrones content on a Trek show, but a new series could take some lessons in how to make an epic, compelling, cinematic universe with a large ensemble cast

More monsters of the week, like in Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, and the original Star Trek. X Files too. I miss that aspect of old science fiction shows. A sense of wonder. Weird happenings.

It needn't necessarily be dark and angsty and Nolanesque, like scifi/fantasy things tend to be these days. If anything, Abrams's films didn't go far enough in bringing back the light heartedness and fun of TOS. I enjoyed them, but Into Darkness especially tried bringing back that faux, well, 'darkness'.

Personally I found nothing 'dark' about STID, making it the most confusing title for a Trek film yet.

Yes, "Into Darkness" would have been a better fit for .. almost any other Trek movie!

Regarding Whedon, I don't know how he feels about Trek (haven't read anything to make me think he's interested). But his great talent is for dialogue, which I think would make him a much better fit for Trek than Wars.

Interesting comments throughout this thread. I'm not sure I'm plugged in enough to know what current show characteristics based on current show lineups would help in a new ST series, but I am curious to understand how it would be sold and who would lead the new vision. The last time there was a long gap between TV production we still had the creator involved and his influence and direction was enough to see it through for a seven year run and then spawn multiple spinoff shows. I'm hard pressed to think of anybody - I mean the last were Berman and Braga which had a somewhat darker view and I know many who would not want them to continue as the standard-bearers (I'm not necessarily in that camp as I loved ENT but I understand reality).
