Curious question...

I'm still in my own little world in regards to trek. I come on line to find new and interesting ideas, not worship at the Alter Of Holy Canon... I do that on Sunday. :)

I also recall how some fans were aghast at the fact that there was a Klingon on board the new Enterprise back then. There was a lot of griping about TNG before and after it premiered.

Sean

"ZOMG WHO'S THIS?"
"Bow before me mortals, I am known as Q!"
"ZOMG why are you named after a James Bond character? His tricks are way cooler than yours!"

And yet... we have Quinn, Q2, and so on. Somehow, the people liked Q ;)

I remember thinking that the new captain was an asshole, the android was a freak, the visor guy was a gimmick, there was no chief engineer (blasphemy), the touchy-feely telepath/babe over-acted, the klingon didn't do anything, the doctor was a MILF, the kid was annoying, the security chief was hot but banal, and the only genuinely cool character was Riker.

Wouldn't you be an asshole if you were given the most advanced starship in the federation at the time, the best crew at the time...and the second you get onboard you meet...Wesley Crusher and a dozen other children running around the corridors and civilian families?

I'd be a bit cranky too.

"I knew there was a catch"

I'm not saying you're wrong, Emperor, nor am I saying you're right. (I'm trying really hard not to see/read too much about the new movie ahead of time, which isn't easy around this joint!) All I'm saying is that people said exactly -- and I do mean exactly -- the same thing about TNG. With less apparent justification, perhaps, but they said it.

Hey Kate, your probably right, I didn't try to come across as saying you were wrong, just that I think that the criticism at the time was unfair, unlike the criticism targeting Ent and the new movie.

And sorry if I somehow spoiled the movie, I won't mention it any more! :alienblush:

^ Nah. You're fine, Emperor. I only mentioned how I'm trying to avoid finding out too much about the new movie to explain why I don't know much about the new movie. My ignorance is purposeful!

sorry, what is a MILF?

thaks,

I'm not crazy about the art direction or a lot of the designs but its still possible that it could be a well made film. Perhaps breathing new life into star trek and scifi in general which IMO is the best thing that could happen.

How is criticism towards the new movie fair? It hasn't been released yet. For all we know, any inconsistencies would be explained by changes in the timeline, just like Yesterday's Enterprise.

Can't we hate something after we've seen it? I'm pretty sure that was the rallying call for TNG, too.

When it started, TNG "violated" THE CANON in the following ways:

1) In TOS, Yellow was Command and Red was Engineering/Security. Sudenly, it's the other way around. Also, Data seems to be science officer, yet he wears yellow instead of blue! This color scheme makes no sense at all. And they started to wear all-Red uniforms in the movies anyway. For what reason should Starfleet have changed that again?

2) In TOS, the ship had travelled faster than Warp 10 in a few instances. Now we're supposed to believe that Warp 10 is the highest speed anyone can achieve (= infinite speed). Also, in Star Trek III they tested a Transwarp drive on the Excelsior, but the Enterprise-D still has "normal" warp drive.

3) Androids had already appeared in several episodes of TOS ("What Are Little Girls Made Of?", "Return to Tomorrow", "Requiem for Methuselah"), but a century later Data is still considered to be a unique thing.

4) Since when is "honor" of such an importance to Klingons? They've always been backstabbing bastards who only seek their own advantage.
