It seems as if this version of Kirk had a habit of looking for fights in bars that may have made him less of a push-over by the time he got to the Academy - at a considerably older age than in oldTrek, of course.
Which sort of answers the plausibility question - Finnegan as he existed in oldTrek probably had graduated the Academy before PineKirk arrived.
Still, I think the idea has charm.

Oh please. Finnegan was a character of depth and complexity. Cupcake was a brute thug. There's no similarity at all.

It would be cute if Cupcake was Finnegan...however, it would also be cool if Cupcake was a creation of this movie. Let's let some new things be just that - NEW THINGS.

That said, this guy reminded me not at all of Finnegan - but he did remind me a lot of someone else: The guard that called Sulu "Tiny" in Star Trek III.

I don't think he's supposed to be Finnegan, or else the name would have been used to refer to him. Besides, he doesn't have an Irish brogue or look remotely like the old actor.

Now, I might buy that the hitchiker Kirk passes on the Iowa road was spposed to be Finnegan. (His lankyness and overall look was Finnegan-esqe.)

Totally. Plus, he could easily work as a Finnegan analogue (as was mentioned by Jeri). In this new timeline, he is the type of thorn in Kirk's side that Finnegan would have been in another, albeit their methods differ greatly.
Still, I think it would be very, very interesting if they were to develop Cupcake and Kirk's relationship in the next one to one of mutual respect. I have no problem with them adding an entirely new character to the original Star Trek crew. Kind of like what O'Brien was for the TNG crew. Who is chief of security for Kirk's ship (besides Kirk himself, I mean)? I think Cupcake should be the acting Security/Red Shirt Chief who lives through every movie....until the last one! Ha!
