Cumberbatch: Tired of Denying Rumors

TrekToday

While Benedict Cumberbatch enjoyed playing an “iconic” villain in Star Trek 2, denying rumors about the identity of said rumor has proven to be tiresome for the actor. It was “really, really good fun,” said Cumberbatch of his Star Trek 2 role. “It’s a great part and it’s really well written. I enjoyed the fights [...]

What's funny about this is that, even though he may be tired of denying the rumors, he's still not actually denying OR confirming them.

"People keep saying I'm Khan, and I'm tired of denying it. That doesn't mean I am Khan. It just means I don't want to talk about it anymore."

Who knew Gary Mitchell is iconic? Someone should at least give him his own Wikipedia page. I've no doubt that other guy has one.

Being tired of denying the rumors could be interpreted either way, but I think it's more evidence that it isn't Khan. Why would he endanger his reputation by lying?

I'm kinda getting tired of all the rumors myself. I've no doubt he would be tired of the constant questioning whichever way.

He isn't lying, since he isn't firmly establishing if he is or isn't Khan. All he said is that he's playing an iconic character and that he's tired of denying it's Khan. What that means is open to intrepratation. It could mean:

-He is Khan and he's sick of Abrams forcing silence on the matter since it's what everyone's talking about anyway.

-He isn't Khan and he's sick of everyone assuming he is.

He didn't confirm or deny it in the interview, but if he's tired of denying it then he must have done it a number of times. I'm assuming it's when someone comes up to him on the street and says "Hey! You're Benedict Cumberbatch! You're playing Khan!" and other situations like that. So if he's denied it before, then he was either lying and it is Khan, or he was telling the truth and he isn't playing Khan. And I don't believe it's Khan.

Sounds reasonable to me. Regardless of what the actual situation is , I'm sure anyone would get tired of being asked the same question over and over, especially when you're not at liberty to discuss it.

Near the end of Xena's run, I recall that Lucy Lawless sometimes sounded a bit weary when it came to questions regarding the exact nature of Xena and Gabrielle's relationship. That's just human nature.

"Really? This question . . . again?"

I'm sure Cumberbatch will breathe a quiet sigh of relief when the movie finally comes out and all secrets are revealed. As would anyone.

While I'm quite sure he is tired of people asking what character he's playing, his response is loaded in such a way as to further lead people to believe he IS playing Khan. It's clever, because it keeps people guessing as to "what did he mean when he said that?"
