Cumberbatch hints at 'Doctor Who' role

But also after watching Sherlock I'm going to suggest someone I never ever thought I would. Martin Freeman...

For the role of the Doctor? No, no, no, no!!

I couldn't even accept him as Arthur Dent, I certainly can't contemplate (the slightest thought of the merest possibility..) of him as the Doctor.

Well I'd have said the same thing before Sherlock, but he's really good in it (and frankly Doctor 12 needs to be v different to smith, hopefully we won't meet 12 for a few years yet though!)

Just saw Sherlock. Was quite good. Can't say I'd be too keen on either Freeman or Cumberbatch as the Doctor though. That said, there's not many people I can think of who I'd want as the Doctor, myself aside. The thing is, when you've had so many Doctors, it's harder to be distinctive and different from the previous ones. The general rule is that consecutive Doctors are very different from each other, which is why it was disappointing with episodes like Vampires of Venice and the Silurian two-parter seemed to have been written with the most Tennantesque dialogue imaginable, but even then Matt Smith managed to differentiate himself enough and bring a sense of being truly alien in a way that the Doctor hadn't really been in the new show.

...yeah, anyway, Sherlock was good.

The funny thing is, before i read the sun this morning on the train, i even said to my other half 'i wonder if moffat considered him for the Doctor'

He has the confidence, the camer likes him, and hes wierd looking in an attractive kinda way, like Eccleston and Smith (and im a guy)

I reckon Cumberbatch couldve pulled off a great doctor, he certainly has the talent and he has a quirkyness in his mannerisms, but the hair and coat kinda set it off i think.

Yeah, i could see him as The Doctor in the near future.

Maybe Moff will make Sherlock his second/surrogate Doctor.

Other than that, it was a great first part. Well written and acted.

And Moffat got his Doctors "This IS Christmas" quote in there. :techman:

Just watched it myself via I player and that was bloody good drama and very funny all at the same time :techman:. Both actors did their own parts very well and the banter between the two was superb. I notice several Doctor Who actors from past seasons and speaking of Doctor Who I would love to see a crossover and I felt Cumberbatch was a little Doctor esq in the Sherlock role.

BTW ratings for Sherlock was 7 million though that will go up in the final ratings. BBC are also pushing for a longer 2nd season for 2011, I would love to see that and a Christmas Special.

I found that a mite annoying myself, kind of pulled me out of the story. Aside from that it was v good though...

Considering i wasnt expecting it to just turn up in dialogue, it took me from left field a little bit.

I gave it a geeky/nerdy laugh as we both got the in-joke athome, but in hindsight after watching it again, it is off putting, but, considering that Sherlock watchers/Conan-Doyle fans may not watch Who, Moffat got his quirky version of the word 'Cool' in there for them is suppose.

Made even odder by the fact that the Christmas line came in a Who episode Moffat didn't write!

Ogh well could be worse he could have found a fez!

I said HIS doctor. Refering to Smith as Moffats Doctor, in that it was The Doctor that is Moffs quote from Moffs season and....
Oh who am i kidding? i shouldve remembered he didnt write Vampires of Venice. My bad.:)

Still, nice little nod to Moff's Who though. ;)

I wasn't havin a go, honest :)

For all we know Moffat did write the line...or maybe its a phrase that's actually really popular in everyday life and somehow I've never encountered it before

Next thing you know they'll have a montage of all the past Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey Jr's image flashes by

Cumberbatch- Basically......run

;)

I would not be surprised if Cumberbatch were cast as the twelfth doctor

I wouldn't like that, really. I don't mind Smith as young as he is, but to have two in a row like that? I'd prefer someone older if nothing else, just for the contrast...

Doubt it cause Moffat won't be around come 12 and I bet he would only play the Doctor if Moffat was in charge still. Hopefully Matt Smith will stay around for a while longer and then maybe BBC should rest Who for a while after.

If we keep up the duality of the current Doctor, as RTD started, then he would be a perfect Master against Smith's similar frame... :techman:

lol.

Neither was i.

Its difficult to get the jokey tone of voice onto a keyboard though.;)

And incedenally, ive never heard "this is christmas" used as a 'cool' phrase. I tend to use "Shiny" though, but thats cos ive watched Firefly a lot over the past 9 years. :)

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed he was offered the role of Doctor Who, but turned it down.

Cumberbatch admitted he was given the opportunity to replace David Tennant as the Time Lord when he left last year, but decided he didn't want to be part of such a huge franchise.

Cumberbatch said: 'David and I talked about it but I thought it would have to be radically different.
‘And anyway, I didn’t really like the whole package - being on school lunch boxes.'
Although starring in the sci fi series did not appeal to Cumberbatch, his actress mother Wanda Ventham clearly liked the idea.
She has appeared in Doctor Who several times since the 1960s, most recently as Faroon in Time Of The Rani in 1987.

Thank God he said no. I love Matt Smith too much to think about this guy replacing him... :techman:

That's a very cool picture.

I wouldn't be sure about Cumberbatch as the Twelfth Doctor. Depends how he plays him. I said before about how the usual rule is that Doctors are quite different from the ones that immediately preceded, and that was my main concern about seeing such a young man cast to follow Tennant; thankfully, Smith has managed to be quite unique and alien, genuinely bringing something new to the part (even if a couple of the non-Moffat writers seemed to forget he wasn't Tennant). If Cumberbatch played the Doctor in perhaps a more distant and gothic way (a bit like Sherlock), that could be something new. He could also be a terrific Master that way opposite Smith.

Still, I hope Smith'll be in the part for a long time to come. I'm very fond of his Doctor.
