Cult films that BADLY need a remake...

Know I'm asking for trouble with this idea...:)

I've got a passion for sixties kitsch, and recently read and watched Modesty Blaise. I enjoyed film for bizarre campness, but on basis of novel thought was ripe for a slightly more serious remake: reboot Casino Royale/ST 09 style. On which note, thought Craig would be excellent Willie Garvin (damn that he's doing Bond already); McKellen as Gabriel?; but still torn on Modesty. Needs someone exotic like Vitti but with a bit more oomph.

Any other candidates? (for this, or other films)

If we were to say sequels over remake I'd like to see follow-ups to Buckaroo Banzai, Evil Dead/Army of Darkness and Heavy Metal. An actual remake to Death Race 2000 (as opposed to Death Race 1/2) would be fun.

Not to mention Barbarella . . . .

I was really hoping that would happen, Drew Barrymore was attached at one point and then Robert Rodriguez but last I knew it had petered out. Rodriguez would at least had some of that cult movie spirit that would be needed.

I wonder how that would work in modern times. It seems very rooted in that 70's disintrested nihilism. Still, it'd be interesting.

Good examples there, but illustrate precisely why interested in remakes rather than sequels. See no point in remaking BB or Evil Dead/AoD (they're fine as they are) but sequels?...yeah.

There's been a fair bit of heated debate in these here parts recently about remakes, and I just wanted to focus on films that possibly legitimately need a remake/reboot/re-whatever. Either because could be done justice better with new technology - Barbarella, The Black Hole? might fall into this category; or because film was a misfire first time around - for me, Modesty Blaise is good example.

I'd love to see a remake of Bullitt with Kevin McKidd. It should be a brooding mystery thriller, not an actiony blockbuster. It should be a period movie, set in the early 70s, not remade for modern times. There should definitely be a green 68 fastback Mustang and an epic car chase through San Fran, but this time it should follow an actual route through the city, unlike the original that cut through various unconnected parts of the city.

Exactly. I don't think anybody would insist that Modesty Blaise was the best possible movie version of the comic strip, and that the old film couldn't be improved on.

I also keep waiting for them to remake Somewhere in Time . . . so we can sell some more copies of the book!

It's not necessarily that I'm precious about them, more like it's been done, and it would be more interesting to see new material with the same setup. I can't imagine a remake adding anything to the stories in Heavy Metal but I'd like to see more animated stories in the same vein. I like Banzai but the storyline isn't really that great, it's the details, so a new story would be good. With Evil Dead, Ash got better and better as he went along, I'd rather see post-AoD Ash then to have to reestablish the character (if Bruce isn't too long in the tooth).

The Black Hole, which they're doing.

Bullitt (with Daniel Craig)

Horror Express (which I want to write, ditto At The Earth's Core)

Big Trouble in Little China (or at least a sequel).

"Yessir, the check is in the mail."

I don't know if it's really a "cult" film, but I think a remake to "The Neverending Story" could be fantastic.

I've honestly wanted to see a good, serious, remake of "Manos: Hands of Fate" and think with a competent director, cast and production values and script it could be done very well. The movie has plenty of elements in it to be a good, creepy and unsettling movie but the execution of it just failed in every possible way it could from camera work, sound editing to even the damn sound-track/score. The only thing it may have done well was the cast (the actual actors in the video portion of the movie, not the couple of people who did the ADR in post) as the wife, the brides, Manos and especially Torgo are all well "cast" and do a good job with the roles and material they have. The only person who didn't do well, perhaps is the Writer/Director/Producer himself Harold Warren as the father but he was a damn fertilizer salesman so what can be expected?

As much of a cult-classic as the movie, in large part due to MST3K, I'm surprised no one has tried to make an honest, main-stream "remake" of it. I could honestly see it, if done right, be a lot like The Blair Witch Project and the first Paranormal Activity movie (which both, granted have their own problems and any Manos movie would have to be traditional and not "guerrilla" style in terms of how it is shot.)

There's enough elements in "Manos" to be a good, creepy, movie.
