Criminal Minds Question

I watch this show off and on both new and re-runs and the same question keeps coming up: is Thomas Gibson as Agent Hotchner the most wooden actor ever? Even more so than Robert Beltran?

I don't really care for his character at all really, he's playing the same guy he played on Dharma & Greg.

I think the point is that Hotch is supposed to be emotionally detached from many years "in the trenches." Regarding the male actors, I like Joe Mantegna infinitely more than Mandy Patinkin.

These days, though, I watch CM mostly for Paget Brewster. She's got this subtle dominatrix vibe going on with her look and manner that is hot.

Yeah, I do think that the show would be better if he had Jenna Elfman to play off of.

One of these days, I'd like to see Hochner go rouge, execute a suspect, and get away with it. There's really not enough rougishness in that show. I was fairly disappointed when none of the team took the opportunity to execute the priest who had diplomatic immunity and quip "It's just been revoked".

Well, this is the only thing I've seen him in, so I can't comment on how he is in anything else.

For this character, I think it kind of works:)

As for Joe Mantegna v Mandy Patinkin, I have to say I preferred Mandy at first. Now I'm mid way through season 4, I'm beginning to like Joe's character more.

As for Paget Brewster - yes I like her:)

great show reagrdless MP or not. Sadly you are right the Hotchner character does nothing for me atleast. I don't mind him but that is only because I don't notice him.

The problem with Hotchner is that he's supposed to be uptight, rigid and completely detached. However, watching someone like that is just boring as hell. The only characters I actually like on that show are Reed and Garcia.

I do miss Mandy, though. But Joe is OK. I don't watch the show much anymore, because I'm either busy or watching LOST. But it's OK. I would like to see them fail a little more often; that would be more realistic.

.
I do like most of the characters, but yeah, Garcia is fun:)

The "Wooden Beltran" is this month seen on stage at The American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco.
I all reviews about the actors you can read the same: Robert Beltran`s great acting.

"The actor who played the father in Act 1, and the husband in Act II was wonderful".

"The magnetic Ticotin imbues Flora with a heart of steel, and she and Beltran eventually give the play the emotional grounding it demands." Mercury News.com)

"The cast handles the dialogue well, with Beltran and the luminous Ticotin leading the way." (San Francisco Chronicle)

Robert Beltran plays Flora’s father. In a gripping performance that shows great depth. “Remarkable performance.”

"Rachael Ticotin and Robert Beltran do wonders with their roles as the switch characters between the 40 years of acts II and I."

Well, this about the "wooden actor".

I think Hotchner is a scream, albeit the humor in the character is very subtle.
And based on what I've read here, perhaps a little too subtle.

It seems pretty obvious to me that Gibson's portrayal of Hotchner is tongue-in-cheek. A joke. You can often see it in Gibson's eyes. He's having a blast. He's parodying the "Detached Professional Lawman" stereotype that has been a Hollywood staple since the days of Jack Webb's portrayal of Joe Friday in "Dragnet".

Can you really complain about a wooden actor (Beltran) when the whole show he was on (Voyager) was wooden?
