Credit card companies are screwing with us

I've heard numerous stories from many people about how their credit card companies have been changing their terms or instituting new fees. I thought I would start a thread where we can air our grievances and discuss the shady tactics they are doing now.

I got the idea after hearing about my Father's experience with Chase. He has (had) a credit card from Chase that he first got 10-15 years ago. He has been using the promotional checks they send (usually 4.9% for the life of the balance) for his operating loan for his farm. (He switched to that from using loans from the bank because the interest rates are better and his farm is not used as collateral on the loan and because the local bank was getting very demanding about when he could sell his crops, and what repairs he could make, etc.) Anyway, he had a balance on the card in question he was making payments on, never late, always paid more than the minimum due. One statement showed up and there was a $10 activity fee. He called them and was told that they weren't making enough money on the account at such a low interest rate, so they started charging him this fee. It turns out that they charge it whether there is any activity or not, so basically it is a $120 annual fee. He transferred it to another card with similar terms to what he had before and closed the account. It's as if they don't want him as a customer. They were making money on the interest (not a lot, but some), and he was a good customer. He never had a late payment and his credit score is close to 800--not a risky customer. I just don't get it.

So, any other good stories?

They actually probably are trying to "run him off" if all he's doing is using the promotional rates. And that's BS, they're the ones that make the offers, they shouldn't offer them if they don't want them. Period.

I too have Chase, and I have a promotional rate, 2.99% but so far, they haven't tacked on any additional fees. I did get a notice that they're raising the interest rate on new purchases, but supposedly, they're not messing with my fixed promotional rate.

Of course the other little dirty secret about these promotional rates is that if you make a new purchase at the full purchase rate, any payment you make is applied completely to the promotional rate balance. So what I'm saying is, if you don't pay the promotional balance in full and you make the mistake of making another charge at the full rate, that additional charge is going to set there, being charged the full rate of interest (often extremely high 19% or higher) until you get the promotional balance paid in full.

Yes, that's true. I also have a card from Chase with a balance at a promotional rate. It happens to be my car. When it was time to replace my van last fall, I found that the best car loans available were about 6.5%, but I could get 4.9% on my card, so I made sure it was all paid off, then bought the car with the 4.9% promotional rate on my card. That way, I get a better rate and I own the car, not the bank. I haven't used it since because of just what you said. However, I'm watching carefully for them to start some crap like they did with my Dad. I have the money to pay it off now after getting my tax refund, but I'm not doing so because I may need the cash in the near future when I try to buy a house.

A couple of years ago, the CC companies were sued in a class action suit for jacking people on the exchange rates if the cards were used outside of the US. I got a claim letter in the mail, but when I attempted to enter my information online, the website wouldn't process it. So, I filled out the form and mailed it back.

I've never received any of my share of the settlement, which I believe was $25.

Now that you mention it, I don't think I ever received anything either. Although it's possible I did and I simply forgot.

Oh, I've been getting calls by one of my credit card companies, when my payment has been made and it's not due for another week.

I wrote them a serious nasty-ass gram today. I really don't care what the response is.

Either that, or they did like the rebate people do and sent the refund with the appearance as a postcard.

You make one slip-up with a credit card, and it totally screws everything up across the board, even with other cards. But when they fuck up, like charging bogus fees and such, and you catch them at it, it's like, "oops! Sorry!" Where are the repercussions for them?

I pay all my bills online, so this isn't really a problem, but I'll sometimes get a credit card statement in the mail less than a week before it's due. They're not even making an attempt to hide their unethical behavior anymore!

A card i've had about 8 years or so just sent me a letter saying that they're changing my available balance limit from 20k to 5k. I don't really care, as I mostly stopped using the card because my new one offers a higher % cash back, and I just kept this one as a backup card, and for discounts on the store it's linked to (LLBean). Wondering how much MORE they think I'll use the card if they shrink my limit to useless levels!

They sometimes mail the bill with a week or so to pay, but I always pay online anyway, so no harm there, and i only even get a statement from them about 3 times a year anyway...
