By my count, a potential Pike series already has four characters set up: Pike himself, Number One, Spock, and Cadet Thira Sidhu from the Short Trek "Ask Not."
The problem here is that two of these characters have an established future from which one cannot deviate. We know beyond doubt neither Pike nor Spock are in any real danger. Yeah, they probably aren't anyway but it is harder to pretend the leads are in real danger if we already know their future. Therefore, some areas of storytelling are cut off. If for example Pike were to get married, we know that marriage is doomed for one reason or another. This is not true of, for example, Number One. Thus the challenge is to create really compelling characters about whom we care deeply in the secondary roles aboard ship, and also whose dynamic between each other and the four established cast members are really excellent.
We will also need a Chief Medical Officer and a Chief Engineer plus at least one or two junior officers (one of whom will almost certainly be at the Helm). This is structure, albeit something one can get around.
Sooooo...here is my attempt.
CMO - Okay, let us go with a Trill, one 'joined' (although in this era that might not be common knowledge) and as such perhaps older than the Federation itself. Someone whose medical brilliance is unquestioned, but with an exacting set of ethical standards that makes him/her pushy, strong-willed, perhaps arrogant, but whose arguments one cannot easily dismiss. Someone quite prepared to play Devil's Advocate but who frankly sees his/herself as the exact opposite. Can be persuaded to change their mind, but it ain't easy and they themselves won't like it. Not a whiner, not a complainer, not a curmudgeon. Here is someone who simply doesn't care much about unimportant things, at least for the most part. Imagine if you will someone akin to Peter Capaldi. The idea is for someone everyone trusts but feels intimidated by. But is not always right. Probably has some quirks, like types of music or food they just don't like at all, or a fierce obsession with some sport. https://i.guim.co.uk/img/static/sys...at&fit=max&s=11f67ca126c5d3359c890733193c6acb
Chief Engineer. A bit of comic relief might be called for, Someone with a wicked, active sense of humor very willing to cut someone down to size. This is a symptom of the fact her mind is always on the go, always looking for something new, something interesting to try. Hence even a talent for elaborate practical jokes. These never (hardly ever) get in the way of her job. She takes precautions. She's fun, but a tiny bit scary. I was imagining Freema Agyaman.
