My advice is: never have more cats than you have hands. The cat who misses out on petting will kill you and eat your. 2 per person is good.

Unless you're a farmer, I think when you get up to 5 or 6 cats you're getting really close to crazy cat lady territory.

I'd say anything over six is crazy, unless you own a farm or something. But as long as you don't hurt anybody, there's nothing wrong with crazy.

I think your emotional state is more important. Some people have one cat that they treat like a...husband or child. Location is another thing. Having 20 cats in a city apartment is pretty crazy. Having that many in a very rural setting such as a farm is actually the norm.

My home growing up is a farm of sort. No cows or anything huge like that, but a large garden and chickens/ducks. I don't think we ever paid for a cat, we just got strays. And they multiply like tribbles if you have any females, so we had almost 20 for a while. But they were just pets. We almost never let them in the house. And the males will always eventually disappear unless you chop their balls off. They's on a road trip for pussy as it were...

Right now my parents have 2 cats, both female. One we got as a stray, she's got long white hair with grey patches and big green eyes. And she's so nice too, it amazes me that someone gave her up. She's afraid of loud noises and quick motions, so that might be a clue about the sort of place she came from.

I agree with the poster who said it depends on the amount of space and other resources you have to care for your cats, as well as the way you treat them. Someone with the right amount of space and with appropriate funds and time available to take care of a larger collection of cats is not necessarily a crazy cat lady. Also, if the person recognizes that they are CATS and not people, then they're not necessarily crazy.

I think we also need to remember there are legitimate reasons to have a large number of cats. A REPUTABLE breeding operation and a rescue/shelter are certainly appropriate reasons to have more cats than one would normally keep if the object were purely to have a pet.

I don't own any cats on my own yet, but whenever I do, I want to make sure I'm able to afford two. Since I'm single, I want to make sure I get two so they can entertain each other when I'm out.

There's a quaification for crazy cat ladies? What does the test consist of? Is there a theory paper as well as a practical exam? Perhaps, she can have a maximum of 3 while learning, and 10 when qualified. Only the crazy cat ladies with the advanced certificate get to have 20+ cats.

Those cats look far healthier than many owned by cat hoarders.

I think that that lady looks after her cats better than this lady looks after her one cat. I wouldn't call the lady in my link a crazy cat lady rather just a crazy lady who got her hands on a poor unfortunate cat. I have no doubts that there is a very good reason for the cat being scared all the time. I hope someone rescued the cat from her in the end.

well, i had 4 cats (started with one, then got another from a friend, then rescued a kitten I found starving in my front yard, and that was it for me, then my step mother wanted and got her own) then she forgot to get hers fixed so we had 4 kittens on top of that, then we moved and left 2 behind (they ran off, we tried to find them to no avail), so I currently have 6 cats hanging around

4 is borderline-Crazy Cat Lady
5 is certifiable Crazy Cat Lady

Unless you happen to live on a farm with a barn, etc that might have rodent problems. Then bump it up by 1.

We've had 4 cats at one point (2 older sisters, 2 young brothers) but when Thanksgiving comes around they get fewer.

A girl at work has around 10. Eight of whom are chronically sick and she treats them well. Another co-worker tried to get her to take his sick one but she knows her limit. So in her case she's not crazy.

We have four, and I now believe that's one too many. However, I do not think of myself as a crazy cat lady...yet. :)

BTW, the cats are all indoor pets. Our house is about 2100 sqare feet.

Depends on the size of your house. If you're living in a mansion, 10 cats wouldn't be as bad as 10 cats in a one-bedroom apartment.
