Well, my eyes always came back to the movie, but the first half was really frickin' slow.

I just think they treated the alien thing completely wrong. There was a complete lack of awe and terror regarding their arrival. These people living in the Old West thought that demons had come from Hell to kill their loved ones, and they were acting like some bullies took their lunch money.

They had a real opportunity to do something truly unique with this setting. Aliens invading 21st Century New York? It's terrible and exciting, but I don't expect the same sense of fear and wonder that I would expect from aliens invading a society that can barely even conceive of alien worlds.

And again, Olivia Wilde's character sucked. She did a great job with the role, but the role should never have existed. I am so tired of aliens taking the form of humans. You're species is advanced enough to completely change form and learn human languages, but you can't defeat a bunch of alien gangsters when they try to steal your gold? Lame!
 
i thought it was pretty good. a solid and enjoyable film. didn't go in expecting an Oscar worthy film or anything. it was a fun flick.
 
Hi guys, just a quick question: can we take a 10-year old to see this movie? She's a mature.. at times too precocious little thing and will be 11 in November. Somehow, somewhere, she heard that Orci and Kurtzman wrote the script for it and said to me: the Star Trek guys wrote this and I wanna see it!

Any suggestions would be welcome. is it a a family film? Is there a lot of violence and/or sex? I haven't seen it, obviously. :)
 
There is some violence, but it's not too bad. No worse than you you'd find in Harry Potter. The most sex is Olivia Wilde's bare back, but that's all they show.
 
I thought it was a bit more violent that Potter (even the last two).

There were some parents with a little girl (5-6ish) sitting in front of us. The poor thing was terrified. Dumbass parents waited until the aliens came out of the ship and start attacking before they took her out.

There's nothing too terribly offensive, I guess. There's violence, of course, and some blood to go with it, and some possibly disturbing images. A child may get restless, though. Heck, I got restless. The film is just dull. Captain America should be playing on the next screen over, and is a far better option in every way imaginable.

Aww, come on, people. With that attitude, it's not surprising there's no effort made that scripts for summer movies get better.

Ironically, all of the scripts Orci & Kurtzman have written lately always get the "it's popcorn fun, no need to be actually well written or anything, as long as the rest is entertaining" review. And yet people keep insisting that they are good writers. ;)

Thanks! Yeah, dull = not a good idea for a hyper 10-year-old. Captain America she's already seen. We may just give in and accompany her to The Smurfs... :lol:

The movie's not dull ... it's a western, they tend to build. There's plenty of action.

As for the kid, I wouldn't take a 10 year old. There's live dissection, people (and horses/cattle) getting crushed, speared, stabbed, clawed, shot, burned, blown up and beaten to death left and right. Smurfs is probably the way to go.

She's kind of a he. Never.... NEVER wants to wear a dress! it's all about the boys' clothes right now. We're just waiting to see what she does when she hits the teen years :borg:
 
Graphic isn't always necessary to disturb. Sometimes implication is enough. I can stomach a lot now, but I was really bothered by a couple of scenes from films I sneak-watched as a 10-11 years old with my Dad without my Mom's knowledge.

I'll give you just one: when Rambo in Rambo First Blood Part II takes out the pirates on the boat and stabs that one guy through the thatch roof with his massive knife, in my mind, that guy's guts went all over the place ... kinda like the recent Rambo finale ... except that's not what happens in the film. The guy gets stabbed, there's a bit of fake blood and they move on. My imagination made the effect ten times more awful than what was actually shown on screen. It wasn't until I saw the film for real in my late teens that I realized I had blown it all out of proportion. I'd had nightmares about that scene. I also never said anything to my parents until many years later.

Kids may seem mature for their age, but they're still kids. Why risk the upset over a film? There's plenty to do without taking the kid to see something questionable.
 
You're absolutely right. One never knows exactly how something will affect them. Thanks for the thoughts about how First Blood affected you. I don't know if we're going to risk it. Even though she wants to (she loves the new JJ Trek and now wants to see this movie 'cos of Kurtzman and Orci).
