Cover Art on TREK novels

You know, especially lately, but over the years there has been a lot of cover art used on the TREK novels that is really eye catching and would make nice prints.

Is there any thought of putting together a coffee table book of just the best examples of cover art (similar to the ships of the line book of a couple of years ago)?

Or, alternately making the artwork available for download or purchase.

I would love a coffee table book collection of book cover art, but I don't know if it's very marketable.

I know there is very little chance of this happening, but if it did I would get it.

IIRC, contracts for the cover art of ST novels don't cover re-use in a coffee table book or calendar. All the agreements would have to be negotiated anew, with every artist and designer, making the legals bill for such a book prohibitive.

Yeah, I figured it was something like that.

But what about the small black and white versions of the covers featured in Voyage of the Imagination?

I'd assume it's considered promotional, if nothing else, which wouldn't necessarily generate reprint rights, depending on the contract. I can't recall, were there even artist credits in the book?

Okay, that makes sense. I just checked my copy and the artists are not credited.

Where do the publishers find the artists? Are they staff or freelancers that are hired per job? Or do they put a job out there to several artists to get a number of submissions of which thy choose the one to be used?

Also, what medium is the art done in? Is it computer based only?

They're freelancers, just like the authors. And the covers are done in various different mediums -- some use computers, others photo montage, others conventional paints, etc.
