Couple of things noticed on repeat viewings

Crewman47

Commodore
Newbie
Watching the DVD's, a couple of things I noticed that I don't think I picked up on before was that when Archer is speaking to someone on the Viewscreen or towards the internal comms he tends to shout rather than speak in a normal tone even though as does most of the others. Is this something to do with the way the recievers pick up the audio or just something they do.

Second thing I noticed on the Enterprise is that they have unimaginable amount of lights on the ship. There are light panles on the ceiling, on the curves of the walls and then there are spotlights spaced out across the tops of the corridor walls, everywhere. I'd hate to be the person that changes and maintains the bulbs every time. Why would they need so many lights on the ship when it doesn't exactly make it any brighter but only add some ambience to the place?

That lighting issue, is inspiration from Herman Zimmerman visiting a Nuclear Submarine. Enterprise is probably overlit compared to that level of reality. I expect by the 23rd and 24th Centuries, they don't have bulbs but lighting panels which are phosphorescent with very little power running through them. I'm not sure bright is the word I'd use here, but by Season 4 there was definitely something more colourful about the show. It's amazing what adjusting the contrast on those Plasma screens did... and of course, a lick of blue paint and a new carpet on the bridge. A variety of reds added to surround of the transporter bay.

I can't say I've ever noticed them shouting at the viewscreen. Maybe it's just the uncertain way Scott Bakula sometimes delivered his lines. If that was a purposeful direction, then I have to give him credit. It certainly makes sense that like early telephones and even video phones today, the techonology isn't always that great and we struggle our way through using it.

Actually I suddenly remembered something. The next time anybody's watching Terra Prime, look out for a stowaway in Engineering.

There's a moment just before the NX-01 heads in toward the comet on course for Mars. Kelby reports to the bridge and a fly can clearly be seen buzzing about near one of the overhead spotlights! ;)

That'd be one confused fly: Wait, I was just in San Francisco . . . ! WTF?!

I would think that having an overabundance of lights (I guess they'd use those long lasting curly bulbs, huh?) on board would be to compensate for the fact that the crew goes without natural sunlight for years at a time. That's gotta be hard on both the body and the mind. Talk about your Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Maybe it had a partner and they got off at Mars.

Flash forward a million years and it's home to a race of giant blue bottles!

Just don't go pitching that idea to Brannon for godsake.

Actually the fly you saw was a lead in to episode they wrote for special guest star Vincent Price, who has a horrible accident involving the transporter, the formentioned fly, and the starboard power coupling. Phlox would have eventual saved him in last act. But then the producers found out Price was dead.
