Coup on Cardassia

Only the Klingons knew about that? I find that hard to blv. Could there have actually been Founders on Cardassia that assisted w/the civilian takeover and got word to "Martok"?

^I was under the impression that Gorwon got the impression that something like that was going on with the rumors he and his intelligence people has been hearig. The UFP probably heard the same stuff but they weren't going to invade based on those information like Klingon were. They were just acting on information that were generally widely known to those who keep tabs on the powers of this part of the galaxy.

Personally...I like to think that the Cardassians pulled off the coup all by themselves, without anybody else instigating it.

I suspect the Founders, however, had intelligence that it was going to occur and took advantage of the situation when it did. I also think that they would've used the Federation coup--had that one actually come to pass--to incite others against the strongest power in the quadrant.

Klingon Intelligence Agents --- isn't that an oxymoron? :p

I heard that. That's the real for the post. I mean, KIA was sloppy and wasn't really the Klingon MO. More Romulan and Cardassian.

So they got this info clear across the AQ and acted on it.

I think its important to remember that the 'Kerensky' or 'Weimar' - like regime that emerged on Cardassia wasn't necessarily a spontaneous development. Unlike the Romulan Tal Shiar, the Obsidian Order seemed to have brought the whole of its resources to bear in the attempt to kill the Founders, and was wiped away entirely when the Dominion sprung its trap. Once the secret police were gone, probably almost to a man, elements in Cardassian society finally spoke and then rose up. Dukat, having some few better intentions, being no fool, and being no fan of the OO, rose up quickly within it. The Founders probably neither aided nor hindered this, waiting for the dust to settle to their advantage.

...And on the other hand, the Klingons no doubt wanted to invade quite regardless of whether there was a coup there or not. Gowron would have itched to start a war against a suitably puny opponent anyway, for domestic reasons. "Martok" would have found it easy to guide him towards Cardassia, an old enemy that had recently been repeatedly humiliated by the Feds and even the Bajorans and thus looked like easy pickings.

Gowron would thus probably have had a number of excuses prepared: "Cardassians plan secret invasion of Klingon Empire and the UFP!" (based on deliberate misinterpretation of the secret military buildup for "The Die is Cast"); "Cardassians are in cahoots with the Romulans against the KE and the UFP!" (based on deliberate misinterpretation of the events of "Visionary" and "The Die is Cast"); "Cardassians are revolting!" (based on the fact that they just plain are)... He just rummaged through his attaché case for the right speech when the time came to cross the border.

Martok was already a Founder by that point in the show. The Founders probably have a better intelligence network than anyone else, except Section 31. They certainly duped the Obsidian Order and Tal Shiar. So the Founders either engineered the coup or took advantage of it. The Lovok Founder stated quite clearly that he had plans for the Federation and the Klingons in "The Die is Cast". Since the Klingon-Cardassian War didn't start an all out conflict between the Feds and Klingons, the Martok Founder pushed Gowron to invade Archanis in "Apocalypse Rising". So, in the end it was the same effort: to push the Klingons and Federation into open warfare.
