Counterpoint

Sparkle Fabulosa

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I just finished Counterpoint and I'm really confused. Was Kashyk a bad guy or good guy? Did he really have feelings for Janeway and she for him? Or was it all a ploy?

It's been awhile since I've seen it but if teacake is on a warpath, be afraid... be very afraid.

Space Nazi's need love too.

Legally (especially from the Federation's perspective who respect the laws of other cultures) Janeway was in the wrong and if the Devore could complain or wanted to complain, Janeway would have lost her ship for being a dirty criminal the second she got home.

It is the duty of the police (Kashak) to bring criminals (Janeway) to justice by any legal means possible.

It's not illegal to tell a girl that she is smoking hot.

He liked his job, he was a true believer, and Kashak was keeping normal people safe from a skourge that threatened their well being, and perhaps their very existence.

He's a patriot that loved the twinkle coming off the barbed wire from the morning sunshine above his very orderly concentration camps.

You haven't seen/read any X-Men?

Kashyk genuinely liked Janeway but it was always all business to him.

Janeway was legally in the wrong, but then again, so was Oskar Schindler. Genocide laws are not to be respected and certainly wouldn't be by the Federation.

Was it really a genocide?

I thought that it was only that we were aware of internment.

They could have been being sent to Luxury apartments.

It might have eventually become death camps.

Or death luxury apartments.

But we weren't there yet, that we were aware of.

I got the feeling that Kashyk did develop some genuine feelings for her, maybe in the same sense as Q seems to. But his primary goal was always his job, first and foremost. He exploited Kathy's feelings as a means towards achieving his professional goals, but what he didn't realize was that Kathy was actually exploiting his feelings for her at the same time. So it was a gambit, piled on a gambit, piled on a gambit.

Counterpoint is great. It really is one of my favourites. :adore:

My heart broke for her at the end:( I wish he hadn't betrayed her because they seemed really good together. Here was someone that was her match as an intellect. And that kiss! It had to be the most passionate kiss I've seen on the show so far!

I'm ready whenever you are, teacake. Bring forth the fanfare! I've spent a good hour trying to find happy J/K fanfiction but I have come up empty-handed.

If he was abnormal from the baseline recognized by his society, then yes he is a sociopath... But then no, he isn't, is he?

Cashyk is however from an Imperium where he is normal and baseline and other modes of thinking are statistical abnormalities.

Janeway's need to save monsters from their deserved and just fate are the antics of a backward and dangerous sociopath from the perspective of the Devore Imperium's Register of Clinical Psychiatry.

The Devore Imperium wasn't much more alien than any totalitarian regime on earth. They don't present with values and core beliefs that make their ruthlessness cultural and understandable. I would bet from we've seen they have grassroot factions that stand against the totalitarian control of the government.

It's not one of those episodes where you go.. wow, I guess there is a different way of looking at this and starfleet is fucking up with imposing their alien values.

AND NOW FOR THE FANFARE, THE PROMISED FANFARE CELEBRATING THIS PARTICULARLY AWESOME EPISODE.

Imperial means many worlds, and loads of different species cooperating towards a common good.

Are telepaths (in this region) an emerging (insurgent) mutant population on some worlds, which is scary, and X-Meny, or are we talking entire planets that have been telepathic for a very long time?

How did these worlds completely constituented by telepaths chose to join the telepath loathing Imperium?

Were they invaded?

Were they invaded becuase the population were telepathic or despite that they were telepathic?

If they invaded a world for resources and then found the natives unpacifiable becuase of their telepathy?

The shoe on the other foot is that the Devore used to be overules by a dynasty of Telepaths that made life impossible drudgery fo rthe flatscans, and this is just equal and opposite to their history.

It's not a great question, but it is a question, who was an awful bastard first?

The telepaths were evil first, but when the telepaths were up to no good, the Devore didn't know it, so it really doesn't count.

Kirk has a drug from Plato's Stepchildren that can turn anyone and everyone into telepathic/telekinetic.

(Janeway does too.)

That's how Archer stopped the euthanizing of half of the Klingon Empire by the Augment plague in the final season of Enterprise.

Sympathy, even empathy is shite compared to self interest.

Oh?

Are you suggesting that Kirk and kashyk would be making out, or would his great grandmother being playing the part of sexy seductress?
