... came out today, here in Sydney, and I read it immediately. Fun, but over way too quick. Roll on May.

Feel the same. Kind of disappointed with it in the end. Is there a novelisation of the movie in the works?

Yes. It's by Alan Dean Foster and should be out in a few weeks.

So I read the whole Countdown series last night. Without getting into spoilers: I am not impressed. Nothing says "we're making a fresh new start" like egregious fanwank, nonsensical technobabble, and a villain whose story swipes elements from Khan, Soran, and Shinzon.

Thing is - I will be amazed if any of this is mentioned on the screen - we'll get the broad "back from the future because..." but I'll literally eat my hat if we hear the words "Data, Picard or borg technology" anywhere in the film.

It's purely a cash-grab.

I hope almost nothing from the comic is mentioned onscreen, because I don't want the novels to have to reflect anything in it a few years down the road. (Bearing in mind Orci said, "I am not going to declare whether comics are canon.")

The TPB I ordered from Amazon should be arriving today, actually :D (Got an e-mail saying it was gonna be delivered early!)

Will any of the events in this, such as
the destruction of Romulus
be retconned/added to the course of events portrayed in the post-Nemesis series of novels?

In one particular case, I really hope not -
I like Romulus.

(POSSIBLE SPOILER!!)

There was no explanation of how the timeline may have been altered when the Narada and Jellyfish were sucked therough the singularity.

You have to think that the timeline is altered because the holo of Kirk that Nero was looking at on the Enterprise looked morw like Shatner than it did Pine.

That's because that's the story of the movie. This is just a prologue to the movie. Surely you weren't expecting it to reveal the film's whole plot.

Do you have to think the timeline was altered when Saavik changed from Kirstie Alley to Robin Curtis, or when Zefram Cochrane changed from Glenn Corbett to James Cromwell, or when Tora Ziyal changed from Cyia Batten to Tracy Middendorf to Melanie Smith?

I don't think we're literally supposed to believe that the characters actually look different than they did before. They're different actors playing the same people.

First of all, that takes place about 7 years after the current events in the novels. Considering the pace of the novels, it's probably going to take a while before we reach that moment.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see the novels going along with it, especially if it's mentioned in the movie.

In the Mirroruniverse Romulus is gone as well. And the same major events tend to happen in both the MU and the regular universe. Like First Contact or the first Borg Invasion for example.

EXACTLY!!! Thank you for pointing that out! I can't tell you how much I get pissed off when people complain about the different appearance of the characters due to different actors and how it's gotta be some alternate universe or something!

I see - can't say I'd be too happy about that, but them's the breaks.

I'm not overly thrilled about that either...

That's not quite true. The Worst of Both Worlds in Mirror Universe: Glass Empires portrayed the first contact between the Alpha Quadrant and the Borg unfolding somewhat differently. And
the destruction of Romulus in Shards and Shadows: "Homecoming" takes place under completely different circumstances, and 11 years sooner, than what's shown in Countdown. It's misleading to depict it as the same event. For one thing, in "Homecoming," only the population of the planet Romulus is destroyed; in Countdown, a supernova devastates the entire region of space near Romulus.

The destruction of Romulus probably will be, since it's supposed to be Nero's whole motivation, and is possibly shown in some of the trailers. Trekmovie.come Analysis

Yeah, I guess I should have been more clear on that. Of course the details differ. That's the point of the MU. Everything seems similar, but it's all sort of twisted.
Both Cochranes build the Phoenix, both versions of the Borg invade with one cube at first. Not to mention all the captains who end up on the same ship in both universes.

So, to me it would only seem fitting if Romulus were wiped out in the regular universe too. It doesn't have to be, of course. But it'd be one more of those neat parallels between both universes.

In the end I thought that the choices were creatively lazy; bringing Data back, moving Picard from the ENT, keeping Worf with the Klingons, a supernova that is going to destroy the whole universe, plus the uniforms. If you had left out Data and had Picard as captain, would have been a good start. I would have also liked to see something more affective than a technobabble problem that destroys Romulas. It could have had to do with the thaloron weapon that had affected space around Romulas....... anything better that a supernova that is going to swallow up the universe. Oh well.
