Countdown #4 preview (and review - SPOILERS!)

Re: Countdown #4 preview

Here's my nitpick from that preview. Worf and his bridge officer are surprised Narada can fire while cloaked, saying "they must have gotten that from us." However, the Scimitar could fire while cloaked, so therefore Worf at least should know Romulans are capable of this ability.

i think it was a tip of the hat to STVI of course.

Re: Countdown #4 preview

I hated Robert Picardo's cameo in First Contact. No unnecesary, added nothing to the story except a forced and unnatural comic relief moment were none was called for.

Or the Dixon Hill holodeck scene, for that matter...

I don't see any particular reason to avoid acknowledging past or other Trek stories. Are you suggesting that every movie should be a complete reboot that must ignore past movies/series?

People who didn't know who the Doctor or Dixon Hill were probably had no problem with those scenes, and for the fans it was a nice reference. What could possibly be wrong with that?

I felt, in this particular case, that there was no dramatic reason whatsoever to go to the Holodeck to distract the Borg. It felt like - and was - another of Moore and Braga's "Wouldn't it be cool" ideas that GEN was already too full of. And yes, I do think that many an uninitated viewer scratched his head at this. I did enjoy the scene at the time, but since then I've come to realize the only reason for my enjoyment of it was the fact that it was a tip of the hat to the fans. It served no purpose.

Now the appearance of the Defiant in the film, that was a valuable nod to another show since it made complete sense bringing Worf back to the Enterprise this way and since we knew that the Defiant was built as a weapon against the Borg. Dixon Hill was not.

The TOS films, for the most part, did not try to do such things. (Fact aside that there were no other Trek shows to borrow from.) If they did, it was Tribbles on a table that a fan would see and enjoy, but they wouldn't make a subplot out of it.

Re: Countdown #4 preview

A TOS remake is still the most fanboyish idea ever!

Wrong. It simply ignores everything except the basics of Star Trek, and is therefore the least "fanboyish" approach.

in a way, to reconsider kirk and spock is the best way to be "true" to star trek. every vulcan on the show was always indebted to spock/nimoy. every captain was always compared to kirk/shatner. they're both at the pith of this franchise. i doubt these new actors will be icons the way nimoy and shatner were, but shouldn't icons be deconstructed and rebuilt again all the time, to reflect that star trek's meaning changes depending on the context in which we watch it.

I very much hope that the new actors will make their characters their own - just in the way Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan ALL were James Bond in one way or another - however, the way I see it right now, its still 'they guys who play Shatner/Nimoy who played Kirk/Spock'...

yeah, bond has been around for a while longer than star trek, but i think aside from connery, the new bond has the most potential to be memorable for a long time. why? because for the first time in 40 years, the producers are completely reimagining bond.

If you read Ian Fleming's James Bond novels, you will soon see that the new Bond is not so much 're-invented' but rather brought back to the uncompromising basics... Let's face it, Roger Moore's Bond was never Ian Fleming's Bond, even Sean Connery became pretty tame after the first two movies.

Yep, the producers were completely right to reboot Bond and to cast Craig - but even there, you'll find some fans clinging to their "everybody's out of step but Johnny" insistence that it was a mistake.

They were both very cool scenes that helped make the the movie interesting.

Wonder how Data rose to Captain so fast...and Captain of the Enterprise no less.

Well with Picard retiring from Starfleet since NEMESIS, Riker in command of the Titan and Geordi likely not interested in any sort of starship command in this particular timeline I suppose the next best bet would be B-4 with Data's memories and programming.

I don't think that there is any specific law in Starfleet that the next Captain of a certain ship has to come from within the crew. It could have been someone completely different, some who had never met the rest of the current senior staff before.

Data's promotion seems a bit fast, but maybe it was due to the losses during the Dominion War and Starfleet was short on personnel.

Data has super intelligence, can think and react very fast, and can learn thousands of times faster than humans. And he's already been a senior officer for some time. He could be an Admiral if he wanted to.

So Worf is killed? Or not? What happened to the klingon prison part?

Re: Countdown #4 preview

its pretty much confirmed now that spock dies in the new star trek movie as only he can pilot the jellyfish. Worf dies in countdown 4 also.

Re: Countdown #4 preview

B-4/"Data Two" as captain of the E seemed to be the "duh" decision when you look at where the other senior officers are. Riker and Troi are on the Titan. Geordi is happy being a chief engineer with no command ambitions. Worf is perfectly content being an ambassador or tactical officer firing the big guns. Beverly is a doctor pure and simple. And Commander Madden from the NEMESIS cut scene is just a one-note filler guy barely more useful than "Guy" was on GALAXY QUEST...if even less so.

Re: Countdown #4 preview

i didnt like picard being an ambassorder. It doesnt fit him at all. Wouldn't mind him still being a captain at his old age or a federation advisor.

the B4 thing was meh. Almost wished they had the titan with Riker squaring off with the Narada other then the enterprise E.

Killing worf was dumb.

and the only spock can control the jellyfish is a big give away to what we have seen in the trailers.
