Countdown #4 preview (and review - SPOILERS!)

Re: Countdown #4 preview

Wonder how Data rose to Captain so fast...and Captain of the Enterprise no less.

Well with Picard retiring from Starfleet since NEMESIS, Riker in command of the Titan and Geordi likely not interested in any sort of starship command in this particular timeline I suppose the next best bet would be B-4 with Data's memories and programming. The Commander Madden first officer introduced in the deleted scene at the end of the last movie didn't have much of a personality or purpose other than as filler, so TREK fans might expect a "reborn" Data in the body of B-4 to take command.

Re: Countdown #4 preview

It's a tie-in comic book, of course it's going to be fanwank!

It'd be real fanwank if Data, Scotty, Bashir and a cryogenically unfrozen Trip Tucker put their heads together to try and figure out how to stop Nero.

Casting couch? Political correctness/token android?
This is pure and unadulterated fanboism, for cryin' out loud (not that there's anything wrong with that)!

Dude I so agree. This whole comic series has been like a Gilligan's Island reunion movie. I hear the Perfesser makes his cameo in the next episode.

That's not only fanwank, that's downright pathological!

I hear Nero fixes the hole in the Narada's starboard tentacles by using two coconuts and a palm frond.

Re: Countdown #4 preview

Seems like Worf can't decide on one career. Starfleet, Federation Ambassador, Starfleet, Klingon General ... what will be next?

Well he is a man torn between cultures... ;)

And there's nothing wrong with that. I enjoy a good wank every once in a while myself. (Talking FANwank of course ;)) It just happens to be very distracting if it acts as a substitute for a good story on screen. ENT Season 4, I'm looking at you... As for the movies, I hated Robert Picardo's cameo in First Contact. No unnecesary, added nothing to the story except a forced and unnatural comic relief moment were none was called for.

Also, all these so-called fan valentines have a way of excluding uninitiated viewers from the experience. And I think even the most die-hard fans these days would agree that new fans need to come onboard if the franchise is to survive.
A minute of Bob Picardo excluded non-fans from FC? That's a bit of a strong way of putting it...

"I'm a doctor, not a fanwank device."

:D

Or the Dixon Hill holodeck scene, for that matter...

I don't see any particular reason to avoid acknowledging past or other Trek stories. Are you suggesting that every movie should be a complete reboot that must ignore past movies/series?

People who didn't know who the Doctor or Dixon Hill were probably had no problem with those scenes, and for the fans it was a nice reference. What could possibly be wrong with that?

I would have loved to see the 24th century Trek mixed up even more. There were plenty of possibilities for crossovers, but all we got were cameos!

I don't think that there is any specific law in Starfleet that the next Captain of a certain ship has to come from within the crew. It could have been someone completely different, some who had never met the rest of the current senior staff before.

Data's promotion seems a bit fast, but maybe it was due to the losses during the Dominion War and Starfleet was short on personnel.
