Could you hack it at the Academy?

Laura Cynthia Chambers

I'll go first. Probably not. Too much running, jumping, danger, and math. Plus, I'm afraid of precarious heights. My best chance of being on a starship, etc would be to marry a crew member or sign on as a civilian worker.

Assume that we had been raised in the future. Our lives and personalities are essentially the same, only with Trek tech and general knowledge.

Considering that in TNG elementary school children were depicted as taking basic calculus... I am pretty sure that when it comes to the maths, I would fail miserably.

Raised in the future... I think I'd pass the standard exams (I've always done well at standardized tests and I remember anything I find interesting in great detail (and enough of things that don't really interest me to get by).

I'd fail the physical requirements. I've never been athletic in the slightest.

I'd fail the psych exam. Too many phobias and too much latent hostility.

There might be some degree of leniency. A Human could argue that if aliens with different physical forms/handicaps could join, why not Humans with lesser abilities? For crying out loud, Hortas go to the Academy! (not in canon, but whatever)

A Star Trek fan group I used to be a member of had this idea that although we call ourselves captains, commanders, lieutenants, etc, we'd struggle to cope in a real world Starfleet.

And if we ever managed to get into the academy and somehow fumble our way onto a starship, then we'd be 'Ensign Numpty. Department: Radishes'

Under Patterson Supra, no doubt. ;D

One would hope that any psych issues would have been helped by free, effective, and readily available therapy. This is the Utopian future you know.

The Physical Training I would quite enjoy. The Leadership Training would be something I'd be very interested in. Studying I would be into, learning about the universe and Humanity's place in it. But the discipline could be problematic, for me. Not entirely, but sooner, or later, I'm going to start clashing with the instructors, here and there, over stupid shit. And I wouldn't want that affecting my entire Life Choices, afterward, just because of transient politics of the Academy, at that particular time. In other words, had I waited a year, or started a year sooner, it might not have been a big deal. I'm an Artist and I love a good party. I might find it a hell of a challenge finding the right balance, betwixt the two ...

I barely graduated high school, have sought no post-secondary education, and am in terrible physical shape. So, no, I'm not lasting any time at Starfleet Academy.

One would hope, but sometimes things are innate.
OTOH, there would never be a better time to learn from Vulcan* Masters.

*I accidentally typed "Vulvan Masters" at first. That's a different course of study entirely.

I don't think I'd bother. Most ships seem to do patrol duties, science gigs, routine stuff. Then if you're caught in a hot war, the chances of surviving aren't that great. It seems to be only a few ships that get the great gigs and even there can only be a few command slots available to enjoy a real cutting edge experience. I'd do what Seven's folks did, get a ship and travel to the beyond in that.

Actually having a degree in physics and astronomy, I'd probably specialise in that in the academy. I'm good at math. My problem is that I was never athletic, so I'm not sure if I'd be in great physical condition. But with work, I think I could do it.
