Could we be getting an alien captain?

Star Trek shows always had human captains. I always asumed it's because as an audiance we'd relate more.

But, with the lead character already human, there's the option of an alien captain. And now that's he's cast AND named, I can't help but wonder.

Lorca sounds like it could be alien.

No reason to think that the character's an alien.

Anyway, the fewer aliens among the main crew members the better. Trek defaults to treating "aliens" so monodimensionally that when there are too many of them they get reduced to one or two behavioral tics associated with some funny glue-on bits. Smaller main cast and fewer aliens, they get a bit more written for them.

There's actually an early TNG novel, Masks by John Vornholt, that's set on a planet called Lorca, a human colony named after the playwright.

Honestly, I'll take that over another damn Vulcan or Klingon.

Could be, you never know. I'd rather he plays the role without facial prosthetics though(This restricts it somewhat for known alien races ofcourse). I, too, would like to see an alien captain amongst regular cast, but not sure with this particular actor selection.

Hard to say since we know so little about the premise of DSC. If we had some identifiable themes we could speculate about the character's story arc and how they would find struggle and resolution along those lines. Then there would be context for the fit of a captain of an alien culture.

Right now what we're getting is 'diversity' and casting and character announcements. (Not being cynical, just observing). Personally I'm getting hungry for more info.

Anyway I'm free to speculate: The idea of an alien captain and Sarek strugglung to bond as 2 fish out of water in a mostly Terran ship might be interesting.

I doubt Sarek will be on a starship in this. Given that the announced regulars include personnel from two Starfleet vessels, at least one Klingon vessel, and an admiral as well as Sarek, the distinct impression I get is that this is a serialized "novel for television" arc that will unfold across multiple locations, with the Discovery just being one of them. Maybe something similar to The Expanse, in terms of how it has parallel subplots unfolding in various locations as different groups of characters react to the same series of events.
