Just earlier I had an interesting concept while trying to make sense of the rather convoluted history of Janeway\Tuvok, and I wanted some other opinions on the theory.
First of all I’m listing all of the canon facts that we know of Tuvok and Janeway’s careers, with as little speculation as possible and bring them together in a timeline.
2349
Tuvok rejoins Starfleet serves onboard the USS Wyoming.
2349-2365
Tuvok serves sixteen years at the Academy as an instructor, whilst the years are a fact they fit up amazing quite nicely with other information.
2354
Janeway graduates Starfleet Academy. She is assigned to the USS Al-Batani under the command of Captain Owen Paris as a junior science officer. While still serving here she takes part in the Arias expedition. Assuming she’s the same age as Kate Mulgrew and she graduated at age 22.
Circa 2356
Janeway and Tuvok first meet. Tuvok dresses her down in front of three admirals for failing to observe proper tactical procedures during her command. Given Janeway’s age, which is presumably somewhere in the range of Kate Mulgrew’s this would make her at the most in her early twenties at this time. So I presume command to mean something in the meaning of a leadership role as opposed to actual starship command. Around this time Tuvok would be serving at the Academy, so I don’t see any problem with him acting in some kind of dual role at Starfleet Command in presenting evidence during disciplinary hearings.
c 2354-2365
Lieutenant Janeway is decorated by Starfleet Command and fighting against the Cardassians. Timeframe suggests this took place during the Cardassian Wars. May be related to the above incident.
2365
Janeway begins to rely on Tuvok’s advice while both are assigned to the USS Billings. Janeway is in her first year as a Commander. I’d assume this to mean when they first serve together. Given the timeframe I assume this to also be the time of the incident mentioned in ‘Night’ where Janeway completes the dangerous volcanic survey at risk to her own life. I also presume that Tuvok was present during those events given the context of his conversation with Chakotay in the episode, and Janeway was literally a Commander in rank.
Jan 2367
Battle of Wolf 359
2367
Tuvok begins making psychological observations about Janeway.
c 2367
Tuvok serves temporally on Jupiter station. This can really be moved around anywhere between and 2365-2371. It would make sense that he served here briefly after the Battle of Wolf 359 while Janeway awaits another command.
2371
Both serve on USS Voyager.
Okay, on to the point. Assuming a certain degree of validly (that isn’t contradicted by canon) of executive producer Jeri Taylor’s novels, Janeway’s first command was the USS Bonestall. The Star Trek Encyclopedia identifies the Oberth class vessel seen been destroyed in the window of Sisko’s quarters in ‘Emissary’ as the USS Bonestall (NCC-31600).
Presumably given the timeframe involved if Janeway was to command the Bonestall, she would firstly have to command it before it was blown up by the Borg. Given the tight time framing between her time on the Billings and the battle she would have taken command around 2366.
Since the ship seems adrift its appearance in ‘Emissary’, one could imagine Janeway had already given the order to evacuate before it was blown up explaining why she and Tuvok are still alive.
So I’m eager to hear what everyone has to say on this.
If you want sources for the information just check out their pages on Memory Alpha, I corroborated the data on there myself directly from the episodes.
