Could have been worse

It could have been Jack Lord on the Original Series or Llyod Bridges. They tried for both and both turned it down...

Lord wanted half the control of the show. And bridges said he though sci fi was a degrading as an actor. He was too busy with Sea Hunt anyway.

Could have been interesting if they would never have got Shatner...

As for the new series, I am not sure what this is going to be like, but i still think they should have made another with Next Generaton or DS-9 cast. In the way of films at least.

Keep it going... :)

I'm of the opinion that things generally work out the way they were supposed to. I think TOS became successful for a variety of different reasons, including its cancellation by NBC. Shatner was born to play Kirk, but it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Hunter had stayed on as Pike though...

In some ways, the task for Star Trek XI is to see if we can indeed do TOS without Shatner. In fact, Trek Today is already referring to him as "the original Captain Kirk." IMO, whoever they finalize as the new Captain Kirk will have to make the role his own and be as different from Shatner as possible, while keeping the basic/original essence of the character intact. To me, the success of the movie will be to make people kind of forget that '60s show in the same way the first Batman movie with Michael Keaton did the Adam West series.

The last thing the producers would like to hear is moviegoers saying the original TV series was better...
