Could a Star Trek movie work with new characters & ship?

As a major motion picture released in theaters? No. You can barely get people to see a Star Trek movie with the legacy characters [like Star Trek: Beyond], not sure how many people would go and see a Star Trek movie in theaters without any legacy characters. Even with a "star" in the film it would be a tough sell. It might... MIGHT work as more of a lower, modest budget movie (like Star Trek: TWOK through NEM), but nobody is making those right now. It's either big budget or small little indie films.

Now, if we're talking about a direct-to-streaming movie on CBS All Access or Pluto TV or wherever ViacomCBS will focus their digital offerings going forward, then, "Yep!" I think it would work fantastically. I think Star Trek is PERFECT for direct-to-streaming movies.

If Quentin Tarantino actually got on board and decided to tell his own story with his own cast, and especially if it had been his fabled "10th film" before complete retirement from the industry, then it probably would've made a few bucks. And, in fact, may have ended up the highest earning Star Trek film of all time.

But he decided against it. And probably would've used Kirk and Spock anyway.

Did it in 2009?

No. They released a movie in 2009 featuring the original characters aboard the original ship in the original time frame.

No Trek movie was released in 1987. The original characters, played by the original cast, appeared in a successful movie in 1986 and two less successful films thereafter.
