Costume Photos from Burton's Superman Project

Brainiac was apart of Kevin Smith's version of the script and is found by LexCorp satellites and Lex makes him a deal when he tells him that he knows Superman after he figures out that Brainiac is searching for him. Here is the Brainiac design...apperently Pierce Brosnan was heavily favored for the role which would have been interesting

I love this, not only does he use white-out(!) on this handwritten note but I like how he is collaborating with Johnny and getting his opinion. Probably explains why Depp has worked with him so often.

After seeing that, I'd bet twenty bucks the "giant spider" is actually a mechanical spider body with Brainiac's head on it. Which could, y'know, it could work, I guess.

And this is just a simple drawing. Perhaps this is how Brainiac should appear in his ship before the rest of the action begins. Really, Brainiac has had a number of designs in the comics over the last twenty years; there is no reason to discount this as anything more than an early concept drawing in need of being fleshed out.

There is really nothing in these photos that when, taken into the concept of the film, really shock me very much.

The thing is if you've ever read the versions of the script that are out there and then seen the concept drawings that are supposed to go along with them...they're a bit of a head scratcher. I have read both Smith drafts of the film, along with a couple of others and Brainiac is written and described pretty much normally as how he would be depicted in say the comics of the time. It's kooky Burton and his gothic outlook at life that detracts from what is in the scripts making these concepts seem outlandish and out of place for a Superman movie.

No...this would have been received like "Batman and Robin" was and set back the franchise another ten or so years. Be glad that we ended up getting "Superman Returns".

I liked Returns well enough, have even been thinking about another rewatch. However, being "respectful" of the Donner vision meant making some very safe choices. Lex? Again? On the other hand, the Burton film would've at least provided what everyone has been wanting to see: Superman in a high budgeted, superpowered fist-fight.

I think "Superman Lives" would have baffled people into wondering what Burton was smoking but to each their own. I'm glad we never saw this movie.

Don't forget that once Tim Burton officially signed, he threw out the Kevin Smith script and started over with his team. Which, ultimately, I feel is a shame. I think the Smith drafts, especially the earlier one with less of Jon Peters' crazy (as described on An Evening with Kevin Smith) is genuinely a good starting point.
