Costume Photos from Burton's Superman Project

Odd stuff. I admit Tim Burton's got quite a creative mind. But it makes you wonder what happens when his mind runs amok, and how much is too much.

People were getting worked up because of the shade of red they used in SR. Imagine the keyboard rage if this was made

AOL would have exploded

Assuming your phone line could dial in. "Good-bye" -- the single msot evil phrase ever from that period.

Oh, and ... fucking aweful. I could buy that as some other new-age superhero's costume, but not fucking Superman. I could even buy it at the next guy to be Batman after "Batman Beyond" (maybe), but ... man. What was Burton thinking?

Though an Elfman Superman score would still be better than a Zimmer one.....

I think the idea was to make a suit that actually looked otherworldly. Since Burton often deals with outsiders I think he'd probably play up the alien god among mortals bit, "a strange visitor from another planet".

His idea about Superman's costume was weird.

However, his Batman suits from Batman and Batman Returns are still awesome and still the best in the franchise. At least he never had nipples on the batsuit.

I've just vomited repeatedly.

This reaffirms my loathing of Tim Burton by a factor of 10.

Yuck!

Oh wow. People should be so fucking thankful that they got Bryan Singer's version.

No... I think I still would have preferred this. The costumes look terrible, but at least it would have been a spectacular, imaginative failure rather than a middling, uninspired failure. This has "so bad it's good" written all over it.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Sorry, but I don't like "it's so bad it's good" trash.

Tim Burton, Kevin Smith, and Nicholas Cage... 3 names I hope to NEVER EVER see associated with any Superman movie ever, in real life.

Burton, just like Nolan, were right for Batman with their specific styles, but not for Superman. The studio makes the same mistake twice. It's kind of sad.

I like "it's so bad it's good" but only when it's so bad that it's good. Some things are just so bad that they're bad, and that's what this looks like.

Well, to be fair, we're only seeing behind-the-scenes photos of a tentative or incomplete costume. A completed, refined costume presented with the right lighting and cinematography -- and, more importantly, in the context of a story that justified it -- could've worked better.

Not that I think this would've been a good movie, not so long as Jon Peters had anything to do with it (I gather he was the one who insisted on so many bizarre conceptual departures). I just think it's important to keep in mind that works in progress generally don't look as good as the finished product.

That costume is horrible, and remember this was supposed to be for Nic Cage. The concept sketches are even worse.

Very true, Christopher. I think there was the same kind of reaction when the new Batmobile was first revealed, but it turned out quite alright. In fact, it fit in pretty well with the idea that it was going to be an "earlier" Batman.

After looking through all the photos, I quite like the blue and red Superman design. Very similar to Jim Lee's take on an updated Superman costume and, to be honest, the costume really needs an update.

Reminds me of Kevin Smith's tale about the script again. When producer Jon Peters came along saying "I don't want to see him fly, I don't want to see him in that suit, it needs a giant spider in the third act,

I mean, it's a great story, but I just can't really be convinced that anyone wanted this. It just seems too stupid to not be a joke. :(

and Superman needs guards in the Fortress of Solitude."

In fairness: what, you mean like in the comics? :p

Superman used to have Doombots. It was weird.

After seeing that, I'd bet twenty bucks the "giant spider" is actually a mechanical spider body with Brainiac's head on it. Which could, y'know, it could work, I guess.
