Cosmostrator and other stuff...

It's been awhile since I've done some 3D modeling so here is trying to get back to some things of interest.

First up is the spaceship Cosmostrator from the 1959 East German/Polish film First Spaceship On Venus.

This design was obviously meant to be a looker (to depict the then far future of 1985) rather than a reflection of more realistic rocket spaceship design. That said I find it quite appealing. It is also rather representative of many forward thinking ideas in the film (many very Trek like) in terms of technology, society and an interracial crew.

This model isn't an exact replica of the film design given that design was super sleek to the point of being somewhat spare with in detail. I'm attempting to add a bit more detail to make it more interesting. I also have an idea in the bak of my mind of whether this design could have been adapted into TOS as an alien ship. It isn't that conceptually different from the Eyemorg ship seen in "Spock's Brain."

This design looks like it was heavily inspired by SF pulp illustrations of the period. That said there are some interesting ideas to it. Note that the three large outboard pods are the ship's engines and that the central section is devoted entirely to crew support. The cutout at the bottom of the central section is a large entry/exit port for cargo and auxiliary craft (as seen in the film). The central section has sevral decks devoted to different facilities.

The film doesn't really specify what the ship's propulsion system is. It could be atomic, but references in the film also suggest chemical propulsion. If chemical there doesn't really look to be enough storage space for fuel for a ship that must launch from Earth, travel to Venus, land on Venus, launch from Venus and land again on Earth all without refueling. A rational around this question is to speculate whether the ship's propulsion is something entirely different. Also, in the film there is reference to artificial gravity aboard ship. If yu can maipulate artificial gravity then many other possibilities open up.

If this were a Trek ship I might speculate the ship was built to launch from a low gravity surface such as a moon or asteroid. The outboard pods could then be large antigravity projectors for driving to fast relativistic speeds. Or they could even be early warp drive nacelles as an alien intelligence might design them.

For this to be scaled realisticly I estimate this ship could be about 700 ft. (or more) high.

I suspect they are oriented upward from the bottom of the ship to the top (bow?). The nose could be packed with navigational sensors and gear.

Odd. If Trek had gotten started in the 1950s the Enterprise could have been something like this.

I was wondering if they might be oriented along the length, for when the thing flies nose first through space.
But I guess top to bottom would make more sense since it's meant to land.

With artificial gravity it wouldn't really matter. Orienting the decks upward might make better use of available space.

In truth this ship could be of varying scale. As a long distance interstellar ship it would have to be quite sizable, but as short to medium range vessel it could be quite a bit smaller.

It might be nice to have the outriggers separate into their own ships? A 1950's version of a multi-vector assault mode

Have been a huge fan of the look of this movie since I was a kid.. (The story is a bit sparse though based on Stanislaws Lem's "The Astronauts") the Cosmostrator's control room looks like a smaller (and in some cases better developed) version of the TOS Enterprise bridge

I do love how the people gather round the pad to witness the launch of this Nuclear Powered
rocket...protected only with sunglasses! when during a test firing earlier, no one was allowed anywhere near as close!

I don't have the time to look it up just now, but didn't one Pato Guzman design both the Cosmostrator control room and the first pass on the Enterprise bridge? Seems like I recall some of the preliminary work was already done before Matt Jeffreies was hired.

P.S. Never mind. I looked it up (didn't take long on IMDB) and looks like Guzman didn't actually work on First Spaceship on Venus. So I'm not sure what connection, if any, exists between the two bridges.

I recall Guzman's name in relation to TOS, but I don't believe he there very long or the extent of his inf;uence.
