"Coraline" kinda sucked.....didn't it?

If you knew my friends, you'd realize how idiotic that statement was.

I dunno. I haven't seen it myself.

I think a lot of people who saw it had a hard time with 3-D aspect of it, so they weren't able to really enjoy the movie because they were too distracted.

I despise 3-D since it's distracting so I saw Coraline in a normal movie theater. I saw it and I liked it. Coraline was one of the few great movies released this year.

I was very disappointed. One problem was that the movie early on tried to make it clear that the other world was just in Coraline's dreams (they showed her falling asleep), then it abruptly went the other way that the other world was real. The book was more convincing in how/why the Other Mother was evil and real while in the film those aspects seemed very rushed, simplistic, bland.

I think I just really don't like Neil Gaiman's writing. It's formulaic and tries too hard to be all wacky and eccentric. Normal person(with now overly clichéd bad relationship with parents or one dead parent)goes into wacky world where weird shit happens just for the sake of weird shit happening.

There was another movie based on a Gaiman book which was this exact story. It was kind of a low budget thing, had some sort of experimental style of effects, I don't remember what it was called, but I never got through it.

Mirrormask was written by Gaiman, but not based on one of his books (which doesn't really change anything, I'm just nitpicking)

Anyway, neither of these stories have "weird shit happening just for the sake of weird shit happening".

Coraline is basically a horror story for younger readers, a "be careful what you wish for" tale, in which the title character learns that her life could be much worse than it is. Mirrormask is a fantasy tale and a coming-of-age story in which a teenager learns that in order to grow up, you must learn to deal with your darker emotions.

Agreed. I saw the movie in 3D and all visuell effects were great, but the movie itself was boring. It was predictable and took too long until the real threat started. I saw it with four friends and none of us really liked it. But a colleague of mine saw it and loved it. I guess "Coraline" simply isn't everybody's cup of tea. I belive,though, that it's a great movie for kids.

I also liked Mirrormask and was actually thinking about watching it again. And while we're on the subject of other Gaiman movies, I love Stardust. Enjoyed the novel as well.

Oh yeah Stardust was an excellent and fun movie. So ranking the Gaiman movies I'd say Stardust > Mirrormask > Beowulf > Coraline.

I didn't know a thing about Coraline before seeing the movie. I had only seen the trailers. My girlfriend had been really into the book when she was younger and told me that as a fan of the book, she really enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed the movie on its own merits, so from two different perspectives it was good for us. Your mileage may vary.

I wouldn't say it was great, or that it sucked, it was just there.
