Cooking tips/tricks/shortcuts for the non-foody.

Yukon Gold potatoes are, by far, the best for mashed potatoes.

I've developed a rather severe allergic reaction to small kitchen appliances--especially ones that only do one or two things. It's not necessarily that they don't work, it's that I have to store them.

For example, rice cookers. And Ice cream machines. And Toasters, electric kettles, hand held mix masters, stand mixers, waffle irons, panini presses, coffee machines, espresso machines, George Foreman grill knockoff, electric can openers, etc., etc., etc., etc..

Where am I supposed to store all this shit?!

I've whittled things down to a stand mixer and immersible blender, and that works for so much better for me. Less clutter=happier me.

^ The problem is.... the only way to make a waffle is with a waffle iron.
Maybe you could find one that allows you to switch out the waffle plates for flat plates to use as a sandwich press. Then it's a multi-use tool.

Alton Brown hates rice cookers and other "uni-tasker" appliances.-

If you use it all the time, then it's worth the extra space. In industrialized countries where rice is eaten every day at every meal (i.e. Japan, South Korea), a rice cooker is used at home all the time; it has become an indispensable modern convenience.
