Convergence, Captain Harriman and the Tomed Incident

I just finished reading Convergence, the 1995 TOS / TNG crossover DC did in their two annuals that year. Pretty good story, definitely better than Time's Arrow, the TNG episode it is a sequel to.

Interestingly, we learn in this story that Captain Harriman's "claim to fame" is his involvement with the Tomed incident.

I couldn't help but remember Serpents Among the Ruins, which is one of my all-time favorite Trek books. :)

Was this mention in DC comics a total coincidence? Or was it the seed of the idea for Serpents Among the Ruins? Or is there some earlier source I'm unaware of that both of these books got the idea from?

Just curious. I always find unexpected ... convergences ... in continuity to be a lot of fun. Particularly in the licensed fiction which (until recently of course) didn't feature much continuity.

Considering that Harriman is basically the only Starfleet captain we know of who was active near the time of the Tomed Incident, it doesn't seem unlikely that two separate authors could've independently chosen to have him involved with it.

Thanks for the kind words.

I can tell you this: I never read the DC Comics, nor had any notion of their content.

So, coincidence then. Not surprised, as Christopher said it does make sense.

Cool, thanks!

Interestingly, the comic story just mentions that Harriman played a pivotal role of some sort, but they don't mention any details. So the stories are perfectly compatible. :)
