Continuity...the Final Frontier

Actually, I have a continuity/canon question. Is the existence and command of Robert April generally considered canon? My understanding was that he was established in the Animated Series, which Gene Roddenberry decided wasn't canon. However, his record of consistency on questions of canon is unreliable sometimes...I've read that he suggested (during TNG's run) that in the case of canonical questions, the writers/fans should default to the canon established in TNG over TOS...anyway, what's the deal with April?

He's some kind of proto-canon. He wasn't referenced in any canonical work, but he's canon enough to be included in the Star Trek Encyclopedia (with a picture of Gene himself representing the character).

its semi-canon in the same way that the Animated Series is not considered as such - in that Gene Roddenberry said so. Gene wanted the Enterprise to be a ship with history so he pronounced that it was about 15 years old by the time of Kirk, with Pike and April being her former captains. And although never expressly stated anywhere the launch date of 2245 generally became the "established year" amongst fans and writers by the early 70s (and was hence noted in The Counter Clock Incident). Robert April was the name of Star Trek's captain in Roddenberry's original premise before he changed it to Pike, then then, of course, Kirk.

Another instance that made April AMOST canon was for Archer's bio which was prepared for "In a Mirror, Darkly" which was written by Mike Sussman, I believe. Among other tidbits was that Archer died the day after the NCC-1701 was launched under April in 2245. It just so happened that the way the scene aboard the Defiant was shot excluded a screenshot of this particular bit of info, although did kinda exist.

Actually that's a very good point. Not even taking April into account, Pike was certainly in command for a number of years before Kirk took over, so, thinking about it, the Enterprise under construction teaser would have to be a flashback from a number of years before the events in the film take place. And I'm not even sure I've ever read anything stating that Kirk was the immediate succesor to Pike.

Unless something contradicts it later, I consider April to be the first captain of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701.

I'm quite sure that in "The Menagerie" Pike is said to be most recent previous 1701 captain.

Mendez: Have you ever met Chris Pike?

Kirk: We met when he was promoted to Fleet Captain. I took over the Enterprise from him. Spock served with him for several years.

Or for that matter, that there wasn't a captain between April and Pike.....God, I hope nobody at Paramount is reading this.

Spock served under Pike for 11 years yadda, yadda, yadda. the OkudaChron considers this to be as two 5-Year Missions with a one-year refit in between.

thusly:

2245-2250 April's 5YM
2250-2255 Pike's first 5YM
2256 Refit
2257-2263 Pike's second 5YM
2264 Refit - Possibly 'Where No Man...' - possibly XI
2265-2270 Kirk's first 5YM - TOS (end date from Q2 VGR)
2271-2272 or '73 Refit under Decker
2273 TMP
2273-2278 Kirk's second 5YM (supposition)
2286 TWOK, TSFS, TVH. 1701 is dstroyed.

At some point between '78 and '86 there was another refit (new bridge in TWOK) and the 1701 was reassigned as a traning vessel with Spock in command.
