To get back on topic, the bogus entry at Amazon for Star Trek: Typhon Pact: Raise the Dawn has been removed from Amazon's listings. It was listed at $2.99 with no DRM.

I understand how people think that the BluRay's are overpriced, because a single blanc disc is hardly worth anything. But the costs behind the ENTIRE PROJECT, like you said, are very high. They need to earn that money back somehow.

The problem with blu-ray is these combo packs. I'm buying a blu-ray version. I don't want to also pay for a second disc that I'm never going to use. I don't want the SD DVD version along with the blu-ray version. That right there raises the prices.

Of course, the reason that they make combo packs is so you have a disc you can watch in your portable DVD player to keep the kids busy on a long trip. Think about it - you only ever see the combo packs for movies that are either family or comedy - sometimes with action movies too. You'll never see a combo pack for Amelie, because that's not the kind of movie you'd play to keep your kids quiet.

I try to buy the combo pack whenever possible; the difference in price is usually pretty minimal - generally under $5, and sometimes not at all. My "Inception" combo pack cost the same as the DVD.

I just got the combo pack for Almodovar's latest, The Skin I Live In. It was cheaper than the DVD alone, and there was no option for a BD by itself. Not exactly the kind of movie I'd use to keep the kiddies entertained in the minivan.

But seriously, the combo pack costs only pennies more to manufacture than a single disk. The addition of a second disk gives the manufacturer a pretext to charge more money for the content. They have a target price they want to charge, and then add exactly as many bells & whistles as they feel they must to keep the punters (and/or retailers) from balking at the price.

Same as with books, production costs on the disc are tiny, even more so, we're talking cents per DVD, so putting a DVD copy in the box (when the DVDs need creating and mastering for selling as DVDs anyway) is a near-zero expense. So it shouldn't actually raise the price.

Of course, it's used as an excuse to add a few dollars on the price anyway, much like hardback books.
