Constitution class Variant Ships

Has anyone determined if there is a height difference between the Constitution class variant listed in the DS9 Technical Manual and the Hermes/Saladin class ships?
I figured the length for the upgraded ship in the tech manual to be 844 feet but the height is a problem!
If anyone can help it will be appreciated:techman:

It's best just to take all those numbers in that part of the DS9 TM and highlight them all with a big black sharpie! Right through the numbers! Make them so you can't ever read them again because they are complete random nonsense. It's widely acknowledged that that part of the book can basically be ignored.

Yeah you're right but I figured out what I think to be the correct length, it's the correct height that I can't figure out.

If you assume the saucers of the variant and the TMP E are the same size, then the dimensions more or less work out as follows:

Length -- 236.167m (774.825')
Beam -- 141.7m (464.895')
Draft -- 60.778m (199.403')

That holds true for the side view in the Tech Manual. However, the actual model may differ slightly in detail. Cut and paste this non-hotlinkable image collection from Ex astris scientia:

Note how the Voyager pylons that hold the Enterprise nacelles appear to be canted down so acutely that there's more vertical distance between the torpedo tubes and the nacelle upper surfaces than in the Tech Manual side view. So the ship is a bit taller...

Wouldn't the ship in the DS9 Technical Manual be longer then the Saladin/Hermes ships!?

James

No, it's actually slightly shorter than the Saladin, but there's absolutely nothing that says a TMP-era ship has to be longer than a similar TOS design. The ship as portrayed in the DS9 Tech Manual doesn't have the exact same proportions as Saladin, for one thing. The nose of the TOS ship's nacelle sits a little over 20 meters aft of the saucer's center, whereas the nacelles on the DS9 ship begin a little less than 12 meters aft of its saucer's center.

And both Timo and Albertese are right; the shapes and the dimensions listed for the ships in the section differ so much from the models as they appeared on screen (in some instances, ridiculously so) that the book is of limited value as a modeling reference.

Ok, let me ask this question. Would a refit version of the Saladin/Hermes ships also be shorter then their TOS versions as listed in the FJ Technical manual?

Depends heavily on how you mount the nacelle to the neck. The ones I have are a little shorter, since I use a good lead (which allows for the nav light) on the front of the nacelle. I've seen other takes which pushes them all the way back, though.

If I could find a superimposed image of TOS Saladin and the refit that would answer my questions concerning height and length!

You're missing my point. There is no official Saladin (U) or Hermes (U) ships to do the comparison. Different Trek fandom artists have taken slightly different takes on those designs over the years.

You can compare mine, for instance (images are at the same scale):

But it won't be an official answer. There is none.
