You know, like a complete overhaul and upgrade.

I'm intending to follow Rick Sternbach's assumption that the Stargazer was launched in 2285, which would make her 48 years old when Picard took command. In his 'gazer books, Michael Jan Friedman keeps referring to the "spanking new" ship, which is improbable if you are of the chronological registry persuasion (as I am). I interpreted these references to mean that there had been a major overhaul and systems update shortly before the events chronicled in The Valiant (TNG). The LCARS system as well as all the other major systems would be brought up to current standards during the refitting process.

There would certinaly be a way, but I am of the oopinion that most Constellation-class ships were retired before or during the Ent-D's lifespan.

I mean going from an 68 year old cruiser (he was in command for twenty years right?) to the state of the art, brand new flagship had to be quite the shocker.

Not necessarily. We don't know what he was up to between 2355 and 2363. Diane Duane's Intellivore suggests that he commanded another ship during that time, and there's that Lost Era novel that's set in the same period (though details have yet to be announced). For all we know he could have been in command of a New Orleans-class ship ...

What about the folks who are captains of the sailing ships used even today for training? I would imagine that some of them might step off very old ships and onto the most modern missile cruisers, with maybe a few steps in between.

And if they had any trouble it'd most likely be from the controls. There's probably a huge difference between the way you work a sail ship and a modern battleship. Whereas on Starfleet ships the main difference would be the control panels, which didn't change a huge amount.

Well Kirk managed to reroute the B's deflector array, and he probably hadnt worked on similar systems for 40 years or more, so they cant have changed much.

True true true... All true. However, there are things on the E-D that the Stargazer never had... such as Holodecks? Different controls as mentioned... and then things simply such as the new responsibilities that he had. Being the captain of the flagship meant that he is charged with high profile missions, almost continuous contact with starfleet command etc etc etc... when on the Stargazer he was always on deep space missions and little to no contact... etc. Though he did have that rather large amount of time between commands when most likely he could have been stationed at McKinley or Utopia and helped build starships of the newest class and whatnot... (kinda like Sisko)

Update. This time, it's the support vessel I mentioned earlier. It's funny, I never noticed the mention of a "warpcapable reconnaissance craft which remains classified today" in the ST:Magazine article - until a few days ago.

I am absolutely loving this project!!
The auxillary support craft is a neat design. Not my cup of tea, but neat. More or less reminds me of a Connie engineering hull with nacelles on the side. Which design wise kinda makes sense, as the Connie was a sucessful platform for research.
The attention to detail on this (and the entire project, for that matter), is impressive.
And I love the exterior closeup of the bridge.

Today's update. I made some changes to the dorsal view, finely tuning it, as it were, to fit my needs. Also, there is an outdoors dress uniform for cold climates, the indoors version will probably follow soon.
