Constantine - Season 1

I think when NBC failed to give the show a full season pick up, it convinced many that the show was cancelled, even when the network said that wasn't the case. It didn't help that people talking about the show will say it's cancelled because of the lack of a pick up.

And since people are abandoning the show because they think it's been cancelled, the numbers are dropping, which will lead to.. wait for it... cancellation.

At this point, if it gets a second season on NBC, it will be a miracle. I say try and get another network to pick it up, and try and tie it into the DC television universe of Arrow / Flash. The cross promotion could only help.

It would certainly help if networks scheduled shows in a predictable manner. Like, every week in their usual time slot. Mid-season breaks, weeks off for "important" 2-hour episodes of the Bachelor or American Idol, half-hour or hour delays for (ugh) sports.

I watched the mid-season premier over the weekend and really enjoyed it. I'm really hopping they don't cancel it.

Also a pretty cool-looking demon for once.

I have to say the new time slot does not work for me, but that's what On Demand is for.

Really enjoyed last nights episode. We finally got an explanation for how Chas can keep dying, and we also got to meet the show's version of Felix Faust, who was a cool villain. I'm curious to see if they find a way to bring him back if the show does continue.

The explanation for Chas's resurrection power is pretty interesting -- he can come back to life, but only a finite number of times, which means there's still a danger to his ultimate survival. (So he sort of splits the difference between the Doctor and Captain Jack.)

And it's interesting that it came about due to Constantine spellcasting while intoxicated, with a result he never anticipated. It does seem to me that the show is getting closer to what I understand the comics' version of the character to be -- less of a clear hero and more a screwup who often makes things worse rather than better and tends to be toxic to the people around him. Which fits my theory that the first half-dozen or so episodes of any series are about appeasing the network suits, and thus tend to be more conventional and formulaic, after which the producers are able to start nudging closer to what they wanted to do in the first place.

Even in last week's episode we got a part of the explanation, which was more than what we'd gotten up till that point. During his demon-possessed rant John alluded to having somehow made Chas the way he is.

Really enjoyed last nights episode. We finally got an explanation for how Chas can keep dying, and we also got to meet the show's version of Felix Faust, who was a cool villain. I'm curious to see if they find a way to bring him back if the show does continue.

Yeah, I enjoyed seeing some of Chas' backstory; that was very interesting. I hope we get more about him later...assuming the show isn't cancelled.

It was fun to see a mainstream DC character show up. I'm curious as to how frequently they're going to do that and if they're limited in who they can bring on. There's certainly plenty of interesting candidates that'd fit into the show's tone and setting quite well. The reference to Merlin in this recent episode opens the possibility for Morgaine le Fey, Mordred, Shining Knight and Jason Blood/Etrigan to show up. Plus of course we've already seen the Helm of Nabu at the mill house.

Other's like Zatanna, Raven, Klarion, Boston Brand, Circe, Solomon Grundy, The Spectre and Swamp Thing would all fit in fairly well IMO. Hell, with Circe comes the pagan gods and from there it's just a short hop to Themyscira, Atlantis and maybe even the likes of the classic versions of Katar & Shayera Hol or the Shazam end of the mythos. If they're allowed to tap the DCAU stuff then that could get us the Lovecraftian inspired Icthultu and the Great Old Ones (think Rob Zombie would voice the role again? )

If they want to stretch things a little, there's always the magical golden age versions of Green Lantern and Blue Beetle or even the likes of Mandrake the Magician.

After the show, my wife and I decided to watch the next episode of Supernatural in our first-time DVD watch. It was season 4 episode 1, which featured a woman doing a seance for Sam and Dean, whose eyes suddenly burst into flame.



Note to mediums: Don't try to contact the spirit world for the main characters.

Note to main characters: Carry fire extinguishers.

I'd also like to chime in on really enjoying "Quid Pro Quo" this past Friday! The explanation and revelation of how Chas has his "resurrection" ability was good to see. I seem to recall that something like this scenario happened mid-2000's in a Rhode Island(?) night club. A band was performing in a small venue with pyrotechnics, stage caught fire and many died. I say that to say it added a bit of realism to the explanation for me(provided I'm not misremembering).

While I found the actor portraying Felix to be quite capable he wasn't exactly like I imagined but all things being equal it was a solid portrayal and I'd welcome a return.

I heard the show ticked marginally back up in ratings and demo(up one tenth to .9). I seriously hope NBC keeps the L+3 numbers into their equation cause those have been adding to the count substantially.

Well, Jim Corrigan has already been on the show, and will be in episode 13 too, and Zed had a vision of him looking all grim and ghostly, so I'd say it's a fair bet we can look forward to seeing The Spectre if the show goes the distance.

Personally, I hope it does. I've had a soft spot for it since the start, kind of like how I felt about Supernatural at the beginning of its first season, but I think it's starting to hit its stride now. The last four or five episodes have been really enjoyable, and I'm finding I'm looking forward to it each week now, rather than just remembering it's on and watching it when I get around to it.

Fingers crossed that those numbers keep rising. I reckon it deserves a crack at a second season so they can really let loose with the universe.

Emmett Scanlan is still playing him in episode 13, but who knows if they'll recast once he goes Spectre.

I think I am going to miss the show if it is doesn't get more seasons. I really liked this episode, the stuff in the house was seriously creepy. I've been a big fan of William Mapother since Lost, so I got a kick out of seeing him as the villain here. Speaking of Lost we actually had a bit of a mini Lost reunion this week, with Mapother (Lost's Ethan Rom and Jacob Shaw on Constantine), Harold Perrineau (Lost's Micheal and Manny on Constantine) and Jeremy Davies (Lost's Daniel Faraday and Richie Simpsons on Constantine).
Later this season we will be getting Eclipso's black diamond.

Points off for not having Zed in it. And the whole "Students play around with magic and awaken a real evil" trope is so corny. But I liked the climax, with Richie creating that beautiful world in the other dimension. The murderer was so caught up in playing God, but his vision was so tiny and enclosed and pathetic. Richie showed him, beautifully, that he wasn't remotely as powerful as he imagined.
