Conspiracy

Ensign

I just finished rewatching Conspiracy. Episode 25 of season 1.

Did anyone else feel that they wrapped that episode up really fast. With a huge conspiracy to take the Federation over like that.. don't you think it would be natural to make it a two parter?

At least that was what I thought.

Nah, I think Conspiracy is cool as it is. It and Coming of Age are my favorite episodes of the first season. I just wish they would have done a sequel as originally planned.

Season one was largely weak, but the Neutral Zone, Conspiracy, The Arsenal of Freedom, Datalore and Heart of Glory were to me the standout episodes.

Season one also was bad since Picard was too grumpy. I think in season two, he started to mellow out a little and be more open and friendly.

It would have been nice, but, since they were "replaced" with the Borg, I always assumed that they were the pre-cyborg species the Borg originated from. It really isn't much of a stretch and (along with TNZ) makes for a nice "Q Who?" preamble.

A lot of TNG episodes feel like they get wrapped up too quickly. I would have liked to see these aliens appear in a later unrelated episode more than I would like to have seen this episode made longer.

Where No One Has Gone Before & Home Soil are also pretty good standouts from season one

...Although there's some atrocious acting in the latter.

I never was left wanting for a sequel to "Conspiracy". It would have been nice for them to continue the "Picard's past as B plot" episode series like this one and "We'll Always Have Paris", though - perhaps we could eventually have learned just why Picard was so grumpy at first? There could have been a story arc to his mellowing.

Oh, well. Perhaps he and Robert simply didn't part on the best of terms the day before Jean-Luc took command of the E-D, or the day after the funeral of maman, or something.

I don't think they wrapped it up too fast, but I wonder if they did have an intention to bring back the parasites. It would have been nice to have some sort of continuing story (Arcs weren't popular back then) with them but I heard something about they changed it to be the Borg instead. Still though, you have this conspiracy in starfleet, the parasites send a message and then that was it. I know they address them in the books, but another episode would have been fun.

I thought it was quite a good episode, however it was distracting, considering a relative of mine was in one of the Guest Roles...

They were going to have a sequel with those aliens, but at the time they weren't able to create CGI creatures like the Insectoids from Enterprise, so the Borg were used instead.

Ahhh I always imagined a CGI version of the parasties, and a really good two-parter for DS9..but it never happened.

Also the episode started out with no aliens at all - it was supposed to be a military coup within the Federation. Gene R. wouldn't let them do that though, he demanded they use aliens instead.

I remember that when I watched it the first time round I thought that the ending was rather unreasonable. So I left it for a few days then went back to it, found it alright then.:)

What was the matter with the Bolian Captain in this episode? He looked grey. Is that a sign of stress in their species?

I seem to remember reading a story, probably in some sort of Star Trek anthology title, that alluded to a connection between the Conspiracy aliens and the Trill. (one of those books Tomalok301 mentions?) It was some sort of "evil cousin" aliens scenario. I couldn't tell you what the title was but it reminded me a lot of Stargate's evil Go'auld symbiotes and their benevolent opposition, the Tok'Ra. Only in Trek, it was the bad guys that tended to operate in the shadows rather than controlling empires out in the open. At least not yet. Of course there was always more than a little resemblance of themes between Star Trek and Stargate.
