What star Trek needs is a Sam Breakstone saying - It's not complex enough ! It's not original enough ! It's not high minded enough ! Then we'll have something. An overused sci-fi device is not going to cut it. Sci-fi writers should be able to juggle their metaphysical concepts.

Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that's pretty specifically separate from science. "Sci-fi writers" may or may not be expected to mess around with "metaphysical concepts" but there's no good reason that a science fiction writer should take an interest in them other than personal idiosyncracy.
In which case let them can the "metaphysics" if they so choose. Certainly Clarke is fond of such musings, as was Stapledon and some other notable sf authors, but many other writers prefer the rational and scientific. The notion that metaphysical topics are a core concern of science fiction is a misinformed one.
And don't be so hard on the "internally inept" - you could really cut into the fannish population if you start discriminating on that basis. Check out the Trekweb chat boards sometime, you'll see what I mean.
