Congratulations James Cawley on role in ST XI

TRP

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
James--

Fantastic news about your walk-on role in Star Trek XI and your couple of days with JJ Abrams. Just spectacular! And it gives a good deal of weight to the fan-film community that the professional community would extend this opportunity.

New Voyages with all the Trek alunmi guest stars has said for years who wouldn't want to 'play' Star Trek with the people who were in Star Trek, so now, congratulations on having Star Trek invite you to 'play' with them!

Cheers friend!

I think it's great for James, for NV, and for Trek fan films in general.

I do kind of wonder if his endorsement of the movie now is because he's been swept up in the excitement of being brought into it's fold. I'll be honest- I'm totally prejudiced against this movie. I feel that, good or bad, it's going to ditch TOS in the minds of the general public and fandom and replace it with something that just isn't TOS, in spirit or substance. Most of the people who call themselves Trek fans now didn't grow up with TOS like I did, didn't live in a time when that's all there was, didn't watch every episode hundreds of times until it's history became as familiar and dear to me as any real history. These new fans don't mind seeing TOS replaced by something flashier, louder, faster, younger, but in essence, NOT TOS. That's why so many on these boards so readily accepted Enterprise, despite the fact that it got so much of the history wrong, and was clearly created by two men who openly disliked TOS (Plus, it was just not a good TV show!).

I know I'm judging the movie before I've seen it, and I hope I'm proven wrong. Maybe it will keep the essence of GR's philosophy, and that's all that should matter. Honestly though, what I really hope is that it's such a bomb that nobody accepts it, but I know if it's got enough explosions and flashy effects in it, and on top of that the cache of being about Kirk, Spock, etc., most will eat it up no matter what. I just really love TOS, and I wish they just left it alone and had the courage to move ahead with something new and original. NV, Exeter, Farragut, etc. is all the TOS I need.

But really, I do put out my congrats to James. He really deserves it.

Well, a a Trek fan who ALSO grew up with TOS in the ways you stated above; I for one am actually still looking forward to; and am excited about the new film. Is it going to be TOS as we knew it in the 1960ies and 1970ies? Nope; but there is NOTHING at all wrong with that. I for one am happy that Paramount still thinks highly enough about the original concept to try and generate interest among a new generation; and in a sense make Star Trek relevent and (hopefully) entertaining again.

Guess we'll see come December. As for Crawley getting a walk-on, congratulations.

Very cool and I am so jealous of James. All the best James and I will look forward to seeing you on the big screen.

Yes congratulations James. I just saw your interview over on Trekmovie and I for sure can't wait to see this movie now. Hopefully you get a great part.

Yeah, same here.

Great interview by the way, your comments have me gradually turning from cautiously optimistic to CAN'T WAIT!!!

The fact that James is also a MAJOR hottie must have had something to do with it!

:bolian:

They don't give roles to unnattractive people you know!

;)

Congrats mate-enjoy your time there and I look forward to seeing you in the movie!!!

Wow, congratulations to James! Very cool.

I have to disagree strongly here - all that should matter is that the new film tell a good, compelling story. Rigid adherence to GR's "philosophy" (which, IMO, was the force behind some of the very worst TOS/TNG episodes) isn't going to make the movie any better, and could arguably make it worse.

Honestly though, what I really hope is that it's such a bomb that nobody accepts it

I've never understood those who actively root for a movie/tv show/whatever to do poorly. I mean, really, how does it hurt you if a movie does well? Just don't go see it. I promise you, Star Trek XI won't come to your house and take your TOS DVDs away. :)

I've been a Trek fan since 1966. I really liked "Enterprise" and am looking forward to the new movie. :)

I believe you'll find that most of the things that Enterprise got wrong were Fannon or from the Books and not stuff stated onscreen. Sure Berman and Braga weren't TOS fans but many of the writing staff were such as Mike Sussman and Manny Coto.

Agreed - and AS a fan that saw Star Trek first run on NBC; and grew up with in syndication during the 1970ies; I can say that, imo:

1) Enterprise had more of the actual TOS vibe and feel; as well as a similar cast chemistry between the actors - MUCH moreso than ANY of those PC and overly preachy 24th century era series.

2) In it's four seasons; it probably had the best internal continuity of any Star Trek series (oh, it had gaffs and retcons, but hell TOS had plenty during it's three season run as well). Also, as for overall 'franchise' continuity; as was stated by the poster above, it may have violated some fannon; but overall it had less overall continuity errors than TOS, TNG, or DS9 (never saw VOY past The 37's - now there's a series that blew chunks from episode one).

That explains why I never got a callback. :(

I agree regarding Enterprise, although I disagree about the 24th century shows. And I also have been watching Trek since I was a kid in the 60s.

We're all living the dream vicariously through you, James. Congratulations! If anyone has earned it, it's you.

Congrads James, and just think I met you at one of the Shore leave conventions a few years ago way to go I wish that I could be considered for a walk on any film.
