Confused about this movie

Freman

Fleet Captain

So seriously, what EXACTLY is this movie? Is it a reboot, or is it a timetravel story, and we're just supposed to accept that the original Enterprise always looked that hi-tech and Spock etc look like that, or are they setting it up as an alternate reality type thing?

I don't know, I'm hoping it's the last one. Leonard Nimoy being in this is really confusing me. LOL.

And what's this Next Generation comic series that ties in to the new movie got to do with anything???

yeah basically, I've been avoiding this movie like the plague, but now I'm interested, so who can fill me in? ;)

It involves Spock going back in time, and this results in Kirk's childhood changing and the original crew meeting up differently on board the Enterprise.

Time has altered because of Spock.

time travel creates an alternate reality, which reboots the franchise. so all three!

comic book is a backstory to the film set in the future. it's basically a bunch of cameos and fanboy sops woven together into a rather ordinary tragic narrative. the film is much better than the comics.

anyhow, I won't spoil you on the details of the movie. I think it succeeds on all three levels mentioned above.

Okay!! So if it's basically a divergent timeline and technically not supposed to be the original continuity, you can count me in!!!! LOL.

So does the film start out in the original timeline, in the 24th Century, or something?

What exactly is this movie?

Romulan Commander Nero and his band of time travelling Romulans from the 24th century ride Narada the Space Octopus back in time to the 23rd century. They arrive around the 2230s or so and attack the USS Kelvin, commanded by the Badass Captain Richard Robau. During the battle, Robau disappears for about 12 minutes during which, his XO, Commander George Kirk takes command. The Kelvin is destroyed, George presumably dies, but saves 800 lives. Afterwards, his wife gives birth to a son, James.

I should also add that elderly Spock from the 24th century also travels back, but in a Space Jellyfish, which is actually named USS Jellyfish. Seriously.

Fast forward 20 years. James Kirk is a rebellious punk who plays by no one's rules. Raised by a drunk uncle has led to Kirk getting in trouble with hoverbike riding cops while driving 300 year-old cars over cliffs. One night, while in a barfight with a guy named Cupcake, Jimmy receives a visit from Starfleet Captain Christopher Pike, who becomes his mentor and inspires him to enlist in Starfleet.

So at Starfleet Academy, Jim Kirk meets Spock and McCoy, rigs the Kobayashi Maru. Tries to score with Uhura while drinking Cardassian kanar. Vulcan is then attacked by Nero and his gang who for some reason now have a drill which can somehow destroy planets. The whole TOS is united under command of Pike, with elderly Spock tagging along, try to stop Nero somehow with orbital skydiving, Sulu fencing, and a bunch of other weird stuff. Pike disappears, and Kirk takes command. Eventually the battle is one and Kirk is made Captain.

If my post included anything everyone didn't already know, I would have included a spoiler warning. Besides, a title like "confused about this movie" should be indication enough that we are discussing the plot and that spoilers are to be expected.
